Wowing the world
When the video of a South African choir on stage at America’s Got Talent hit social media last week, South Africans had an opportunity to feel immensely proud again. What is more, it transpired that the passionate man helping to inspire the very talented group of young singers of the Ndlovu Youth Choir is Ralf Schmitt, choir master of Rustenburg Hoërskool. The Ndlovu Choir received a standing ovation from judges Simon Cowell, Julianne Hough, Gabrielle Union and Howie Mandel. Their rendition of My African Dream completely wowed the audience on US television last Tuesday night. The choir auditioned on the 14th season of America’s Got Talent. (Photo:https://choir.africa/)

BONUS - RUSTENBURG - Police here have arrested a man in connection with a scam promising desperate people jobs at the municipality.
The man allegedly brought job seekers under the impression that he was in a position to secure them employment at the Rustenburg Municipality.
He then required their original ID documents to ‘make arrangements’. He then used this ID documents to open accounts to buy himself luxury items.
The jobs never realised - and he was able to live a lavish life on the backs of these poor people.
For the full story, see this week’s Rustenburg Herald.
The investigating officer (left) interviewing the suspect on Friday (28 June).
Man arrested for ‘jobs for sale’
Mr Lucky Moteane, President of the Rustenburg Golf Club, Mr Haagen Wenhold - Club Captain and Mr Kobus Wolfaardt (Treasurer) photographed in front of the clubhouse last week during a meeting with Rustenburg Herald after months of rumours and speculation that the Rustenburg Golf Club has been sold.
Golf Club not sold - not by a long shot!
BONUS - RUSTENBURG - There is not a single grain of truth in rumours that the Rustenburg Golf Club has been sold and that the club - one of the oldest golf clubs in the country - suddenly has a new owner in the person of the well-known Rustenburg businessman, Mr MH Tayob.
“The Rustenburg Golf Club has not been sold, it has never been sold nor will it ever be sold unless the club and its members decide otherwise!” This was the clear message by the committee of the Rustenburg Golf Club after increasing reports that the club has a new owner and that the future of the once promising club appears to be somewhat bleak, began surfacing some 12 to 18 months ago. Rustenburg Herald prompted management of the Rustenburg Golf Club for its position on the issue after the latest surge in rumours on Social Media in recent weeks, wherein it is speculated that personnel should be concerned about possible job losses.
The idea of a management contract with an “outside partner” became a reality after the club suffered quite severe financial losses and a decline in income as a result of flood damage and since the insurance policy at the time offered very little recourse. Another major disappointment was when the Rustenburg Municipality indicated that it would not be able to assist the Golf Club financially in any way whatsoever, in spite of the fact that the land of the Rustenburg Golf Club belonged to the Rustenburg Municipality and that the latter was also responsible for the construction of
the dam which later collapsed. The damage at the club was estimated at R5 million. Hence the contract with Tayob in 2016.
An extensive agreement was drawn up between the then committee of the club and Tayob allowing him to manage the club for his own account, to benefit from profits generated, but also that losses would be for his account. The agreement furthermore pertained that Mr Tayob would settle all previous outstanding creditors of the club and that written proof of this be submitted.
Of course, monthly financial statements to the club committee would also be provided with the condition that the club be maintained to a standard befitting Rustenburg.
“Unfortunately, this is not how things have panned out” a committee member describes the situation. It soon became clear that the contract agreements were not being honoured to the satisfaction of the Golf Club and its members and that things were getting out of control. A major “audit” on the condition of the greens and general facilities of the club by a leading company in April this year, filed a damning report rendering an alarming percentage of the greens
“unplayable”. Monthly reports were not submitted and the club committee was hardly ever consulted on important issues. In general there appeared to be an atmosphere of distrust and non-disclosure between Mr Tayob and the committee. From time to time the club furthermore had to deal with persisting rumours that it has apparently been sold. The committee is fully aware of Mr Tayob being involved in “negotiations”
aimed at the selling of the club. “It is unfortunate that Mr Tayob and apparently, the public at large are under the impression that he (Tayob) had purchased the club, which is not the case at all. The situation at the moment is that Mr Tayob and the Rustenburg Golf Club Committee are disputing the issue. The committee is currently investigating all its options and legal recourse is not excluded, Rustenburg Herald was told.
(In the weeks prior to Rustenburg Herald’s meeting with the committee, Rustenburg Herald fruitlessly attempted to speak and/or to meet with Mr MH Tayob and Ms Ilse Marais acting as his personal assistant to come to terms with the latest developments. Despite agreements to set up meetings and letters that would be forthcoming from Tayob’s legal representatives, nothing has materialised no date - Red).

Rotary mountain bike race
BONUS - RUSTENBURG - The Executive Mayor of the Rustenburg Local Municipality, Cllr Mpho Khunou, joined the throngs of Rustenburg residents, who came out in their numbers despite the chilly winter’s morning to be part of the #Y4R - Youth for Rustenburg - annual games held at the Olympia Park Stadium.
The #Y4R is a month long program spearheaded by the municipality to intensify the engagement between the youth of Rustenburg and the municipality to bring about the desired socio-economic shift. The program, which was launched three weeks ago, laid the foundation for the month’s festivities which created dialogue and engagement with leaders from government, business and civil society movement.
The Mayor, in his address to the residents marking the end of youth month, said the #Y4R was not an exercise for ticking boxes as it was etched in the history of the country, and takes stock of the role and contribution of the youth in the liberation of the country into a democratization of a system of governance. “If we fail to acknowledge the youth, it means there is no future for this country. As a municipality we are obliged to provide support to the youth through the varying initiatives we have, it is why today
we are so grateful to Standard Bank, who deemed it fit, to also not only become a part of this but make a donation of school shoes. This add impetus to the municipality’s campaign “collect a shoe” which aims to make provision of basic amenities for school going children particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds,” the mayor continued.
Mayor Khunou said the donation or more than 2000 school shoes by the banking giant is testimony to their seriousness about access to education among the youth of the country.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Local Economic Development Mr. Ofentse Kombe, thanked the residents who braved the winter morning to be part of the fun walk, and urged the community to ensure that beyond the fun and games the SMME’s which formed part of the day’s activities at the crafts and arts market should be supported as this is the only way to ensure the
growth of the local economy. MMC Kombe highlighted the challenges that are faced by many emerging SMME’s - which included lack of support and access to main-stream markets.
“We cannot have emerging businesses forever, at a certain point growth must be visible and it is up to you and I to ensure that we support our own people. It is for that reason that the stadium today will filled by different emerging enterprises who intend on making sure that their product offerings are no longer best kept secrets,” Kombe reiterated.
The day included netball and soccer games, as well as entertainment to concluded yet another successful #Y4R installment.
Youth encouraged to be fit and healthy

As the evening goes on it gets colder and darker, this symbolizes the emotions of the cancer patient.
Round about 1:00am to 2:00am it represents the time treatment starts – exhaustion, feeling sick, not wanting to go on, possibly wanting to give up. As participant, you have been walking and feel much the same way. You are tired, want to sleep, maybe even want to go home, but you cannot stop or give up. The sun rising symbolizes the end of treatment for the cancer patient. They see the light at the end of the tunnel and know that life will go on.
The morning light symbolizes a new day full of life and excitement, a new beginning for the cancer patient. As a participant, you will feel the brightness of the morning and know that the end of the Relay is close at hand.
At Relay, teams of 10-15 friends, neighbours, families
and co-workers commit to having at least one team member walking around the track at all times for 12 hours, because cancer neither slumbers nor sleeps. Teams are encouraged to raise funds in support of the fight against cancer. Teams camp out overnight around the track.
“On behalf of the Cancer Association of South Africa, Rustenburg I would like to invite you, your family, friends and staff to enter a team for the Rustenburg event which will take place on 27 September 2019 at the Rustenburg Golf Club. Relay For Life gives you the opportunity to show your support for Cancer Survivors and join in the fight to end the disease. We suggest that the team then do fundraising for CANSA additionally to raise more funds”.
