Minister gives thumbs up for work on N12

Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerks- dorp - Millions have been spent on the upgrading of the N12 national road and work is still continuing.

The Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula visited Klerks- dorp, Potchefstroom and Wolmaransstad last week to conduct an inspection on the progress made to date following the commitment made during the Presidential Imbizo held in Mahikeng recently.

The N12 referred to as ‘The Treasure Route’ connects to Gauteng, the Northern Cape and, ultimately, to Cape Town

in the Western Cape. Some sections of the road which were previously under the jurisdic- tion of the province and various municipalities were transferred to the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) for repairs.

Minister Mbalula started his inspection in Potchefstroom where he was welcomed by the MEC Public Works and Roads Oageng Molapisi, the mayors of the various municipalities, SANRAL board Chair Themba Mhambi, SANRAL Acting CEO Lehlohonolo Memeza, SANRAL project managers

responsible for the project, and the appointed contractors on the project.

“I’m happy with what I have seen. This tells a story of what we want to achieve,” he said.

The Minister also used the opportunity to announce that a campaign to fix potholes throughout the country - to be led by the SANRAL - will be launched next month.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa entrusted me with a mandate to take over the fixing of potholes throughout the country. So, by July

we

will be launching a national campaign to start fixing pot- holes,” he added.

Minister Mbalula said he is hard at work to make final inputs to submit the plan to Na- tional Treasury to use allocated budget to address the issue of potholes.

Work on the restoration of se- lected pavement areas followed by asphalt commenced on April 11 and the anticipated date for completion is July 22 for Wolmaransstad and July 29 for Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp.

To date, R26 million has been spent and the allocated budget is R62 million.

Minister Mbalula thanked SANRAL, the provincial go- vernment and the community for ‘saam werk’ (working toge- ther) during the rollout of the project and acknowledged that there is still more work to be done. “The work is not done yet, and this is not my last visit.

I will come back again in July to assess further progress and expect the project to be com- pleted as planned,” he said.

Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - Un- lawful industrial action at various Eskom power stations has impacted planned main- tenance and repairs, and at some stations the full complement of workers have not repor- ted for duty. ‘

This caused an extension of loadshed- ding at stage 4 until Wednesday June 29.

South Africans must steel themselves for even longer loadshedding, should need be, warned Eskom on Sunday afternoon.

“There is a possibility that the stage of load- shedding may have to change at short no- tice, depending on the state of the plant and the availability of labour,’’ the statement said.

“Currently approximately 4 000MW of generation capacity is at risk due to the ille- gal strike action. It is therefore necessary to replenish emergency generation reserves to be able to react to unforeseen circumstances.

Adequate emergency reserves are crucial to

assist with the generation deficit while deal- ing with generating units that may trip owing to unlawful action, and to compensate for the inability to return generating units timeously to service. Protracted strike actions may lead to further damage and prolonged delays to returning units to service, which would com- pound an already constrained power sys- tem.”

Eskom said it continues to closely moni- tor the system, adjust and communicate any

changes as may be necessary. “We appeal to all South Africans to help limit the impact of the shortages by continuing to reduce the usage of electricity and to switch off all non- essential items.

“We would like to remind the public that loadshedding is implemented only as a last resort to protect the national grid. We there- fore urge all South Africans to continue us- ing electricity sparingly especially during these uncertain times on the power system.”

Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - The North West has recorded a 41% increase in children be- tween the ages of 10 and 14 years old giving birth in healthcare facilities.

In response to a question posed by the DA in the Provincial Legislature, the Department of Health (DoH) revealed that they recorded 153 deliveries in girls between the ages of 10 and 14 from April 2020 to March 2021. It increased to 216 deliveries

for the same period in 2021/22.

During the same period, the DoH noted an increase of

almost 17% in girls be- tween the ages of 15 and 19. Between April 2020 and March

The statistics provided, paint a worrisome picture

that requires interven- tion from all stake-

holders and stern action against adults

who impregnate chil- dren, said the DA’s Gavin Edwards.

“Teenage pregnan- cies are a major cause

of concern in the province, especially where there are allegations of statutory rape. Pregnancies at such an early age are associated with significant health risks, including complications at delivery and pregnancy hypertensive disorders. Low birth weight, post-natal depression, and anaemia are just some of the other complications in teenage pregnancies. Girls who give birth at young ages are often forced to drop out of school to care for the babies and often have limited access to resources to raise a baby.”

The DA will demand that the Department of Social Development outlines its intervention measures to deal with this crisis. The DA said it will submit further urgent questions to the SAPS to provide them with statistics of statutory rape cases reported in the periods above and the status of those cases. “It will assist us in linking and as- sessing if any criminal cases were lodged with the police in situations where adults may have abused or raped young girls.

The North West DoH and the Department of Social Development are clearly failing to deal with teenage pregnancies. The DA calls for an end to child rapes and teenage pregnancies. Children must be at school and playgrounds, not in mater- nity wards,’’ Edwards said.

Housesitting with Mr Bean

A new comedy on Netflix features Rowan At- kinson playing a housesitter called Trevor. It’s almost like putting Mr Bean in charge, which leads to mayhem.

The series, Man vs Bee, features a couple called Nina and Christian, who put their precious belongings and a manual to control their smart mansion in the hands of a first- time housesitter.

Before leaving, they say that the lock and unlock codes

are the years of famous naval battles and in case of any mistake only Nina’s voice can control it.

According to Atkinson, he is not playing Mr Bean, but Trevor is a copy – only difference is he can talk.

His nemesis, as the title suggests, is a bee and a dog called Cupcake. One of the negatives, according to a British newspaper, is the lack of characterisation for the bee.

It’s worth binging all nine episodes.

ON THE ROCKS

by Thando Pato • Melinda Ferguson Books

On the Rocks: Memoir of a high-functioning alcoholic. Thirty- nine-year-old Thando is living in total denial about her drinking.

On the surface her life looks aspirational - great job, apartment, snazzy car. But behind the façade she harbours a dark and shameful secret - she can’t control her drinking. To the outside world she looks like a woman who loves having fun, always with a glass of wine in her hand. But alone at home, she’s knocking back a bottle or two a night under the guise of ‘un-

winding’. It’s not until she takes a yearlong break from booze, that she’s forced to confront her crippling anxiety and depres- sion, which now have taken a toll on her high-powered career.

She returns to drinking thinking that she can moderate until life takes a cruel twist and she’s diagnosed with breast cancer. For the next two years she chronicles her addiction as she spirals out of control before calling it quits just before lockdown in March 2020. The road to recovery is brutal as she appears to be the only one sober in the midst of a pandemic.

On the Rocks: Memoir of a high-functioning alcoholic. Thirty- nine-year-old Thando is living in total denial about her drinking.

Die reeks begin met die woorde: “You’re not go- ing to like me when this is over.”

The way I die is geen uitsondering nie. Hy is

In The way I die, neem iemand ’n kon-

Hy is (in sy eie woorde): “I am a killer not a protector, a sword not the armor, a goddamn gun not a bulletproof vest.”

Toby is still missing

Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - In a quest to empower subsistence and smallholder farmers in the Province, the North-West Department of Agricul- ture and Rural Development (NWDARD) recently trained a group of farmers on potato production.

The initiative is part of the NWDARD’s Food Security Strategic Plan (FSSP) of enhancing pro- duction through alignment with technologies and enhancing enterprise development for smallholder farmers.

The training was provided by the Agricultural Re- search Council (ARC) and the department availed resources such as potato seeds, fertilizers and chemi- cals. Potato production is one of the most expensive enterprises within the agricultural sector of South Africa with less than 1% of total production done by disadvantaged farmers.

Speaking during the provincial potato harvest day function held recently, MEC Desbo Mohono com- mended all the nine farmers for completing their training. She further went on to say that the Depart- ment embarked on this initiative with the ARC with the aim of skilling the potential entrants to the potato industry

“It is researched that less than 1% of total produc- tion is done by black farmers due to high costs with- in the potato industry. So the Department took these nine farmers to help them unlock the potato indus- try. As a department we are neither compromising nor taking chances when coming to food security measures throughout the entire province. The high inputs costs should not deter our farmers to forge ahead because once in, rewards are much greater at the ultimate,” MEC Mohono expressed.

From ARC, Dr Lerato Matsaunyane thanked the Department for coming up with such a good ini- tiative that will not only see farmers being trained but will also contribute in making sure that there is enough food production and job opportunities that will be created if sustained. The potato subsector has a potential to create sustainable employment oppor- tunities for everyone along the value chain. This pro- gramme aims to serve as a model to increase potato production in the North-West Province. By empo- wering these farmers through relevant programmes, they could adopt a commercial mind-set which can unlock a powerhouse of rural development and food security in the province.

Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - A family from Wilkoppies is destitute after their dog disappeared.

Toby was last seen in the yard of his home in Voss Street on June 12. It looks like he escaped through a gate in the back yard. His family is offering a reward of R5 000 to get their dog back.

Toby was a rescue at the Matlosana Animal Shel- ter in Stilfontein. Marja Pretorius adopted him. She pleads with the community to help get her dog back.

According to her mother, Suzette Kotze, they used tracker dogs to trace Toby’s scent but they lost it in Irenepark.

“We think someone might have him. He is such a friendly dog.

My daughter is destitute. Toby was like a baby to her. Please bring him back,’’ she said.

Anyone who sees the dog, can contact Hein on 083 235 3286, Marja on 072 825 9369 or Suzette on 072 814 5927.

Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - The Department of Human Settle- ments in the North West will fast track the upgrading of informal settlements in mining areas around the Bojanala and Dr Kenneth Kaunda District

The upgrades will form part of the major projects the department will be embarking on in this financial year.

Mushrooming of informal settle- ments continues to perpetuate the ongoing housing challenges across the province especially in mining areas.

The settlements are established close to the mining areas, mostly to allow migrant workers to stay close to their work place. The emergence of such settlements, creates health

hazardous conditions and further perpetuate chal- lenges of other social ills.

However the department of Human Settlements has observed the challenge such development project within the housing sector.

The department appealed to different local munici- palities to implement strict Bylaws to prevent further growth on such settle- ments.

According to the MEC for Human Settlement in the North West, Lenah Miga, the department has

the responsibility to improve housing conditions in the informal settlements as well as to improve the well-being of the North West communities.

“It is the responsibility of the depart- ment of human settlements to provide and integrated human settlements to our communities. We must make sure that where our people live, there are basic services, closer to their where they can receive government services, where there is leisure and security.

However we call achieve mission if we work closely with municipalities,”

said MEC Miga.

Miga further highlighted that it is not all settlements that will be upgraded

in this financial year. She said others are to be upgraded within the Medium Term Expenditure Framework through the Informal Settlements Upgrading partnerships Grant.

The department has vowed to double its efforts to make sure that it closes the backlog created during the lock- down period.

“We will ensure that we build houses as it is our mandate, prioritise women, people with disability, youth and other vulnerable groups. We have set our- selves targets and involved stakehol- ders. So we are ready to deliver and make this province a home to many,”

said Miga.

The department has planned to deliver 4 879 units across the province for the year 2022/23.

Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp -June is Nation- al Men’s Health Month, a month used to encourage men to take care of their bodies by eating correctly, exercis- ing, and increasing efforts to prevent disease. When it comes to prostate cancer and lifestyle factors, there is some evidence that a diet low in vegetables and high in animal fat, particularly red and processed meats, may increase a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer.

According to the National Cancer Registry (NCR), the incidence of prostate cancer in South Africa almost doubled between 2007 and 2017, with current statistics stating that 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.

Prof Shingai Mutambirwa, a founding member of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa (PCF), says that prostate cancer is the second most common cause of male death from cancer, and the second most common cancer in men, after skin cancer.

“We always advise men to follow a healthy diet and to be physically active, as this helps to maintain good gen- eral health,” says Andrew Oberholzer, CEO of the Pros- tate Cancer Foundation of South Africa (PCF) when asked what lifestyle factors may influence the develop- ment of prostate cancer. He says that the dietary intake of lycopene, the organic pigment which gives tomatoes and some other fruits and vegetables their colour, has been reported to decrease the risk of prostate cancer.

According to the World Cancer Research Fund Inter- national, studies have indicated that men who consume canned and cooked tomatoes several times a week could benefit from a decreased risk of prostate cancer, com- pared with men who never consume these foods.

While these findings are encouraging, Oberholzer says that there is just not enough evidence yet to establish a definite link.

“At this stage, the only modifiable risk factor that has been identified is ejaculatory frequency. There is evi- dence that men who have more than 21 ejaculations per month have a 20% reduced risk for prostate cancer,”

says Oberholzer.

Race is a major risk factor for prostate cancer, with black African men having a 60% increased risk for pros- tate cancer. They are also about 2.5 times more likely to die from the disease than their white counterparts.

Age is also a risk factor, with the incidence peaking

between the ages of 65 and 74, while family history is another. “Having a first-degree relative with prostate or breast cancer increases the risks significantly. There is a lot of development in terms of genetics and prostate can- cer, so hopefully we will eventually reach a point where genetic testing will be able to identify at risk individu- als,” he says.

It is because of these risk factors that African men and men who have a family history of prostate and/or breast cancer in a first degree relative need to get screened an- nually from the age of 40. All men over the age of 45 need to be screened annually. In addition, patients with a history of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and / or with a clinical suspicion of prostate cancer, regardless of their age or race group, should be tested.

Mutambirwa, who is the Head of Department of Urol- ogy at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) in Pretoria, says that if you pick up prostate can- cer early, which requires screening, you have a 95%

chance of being cured and will have a similar life expec- tancy to someone without the cancer.

“A PSA blood test at your health care practi- tioner can take a couple of seconds and can po- tentially save your life,” he says. A PSA test is a simple blood test that measures the amount of pros- tate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood stream. An elevated reading could indicate the presence of pros- tate cancer and would require further investigation.

A digital rectal examination (DRE) should also be per- formed as there are some types of prostate cancer that don’t cause a rise in PSA.

An increase in having to urinate, especially at night, and the urine stream becoming weaker, are two symp- toms that older men in particular need to be aware of when it comes to possible signs of prostate cancer, although these symptoms are often a related to an en- larged prostate.

While the myriad of health information out there can be overwhelming when it comes to disease pre- vention, the bottom line is that exercising, not smok- ing and following a healthy diet are the corner- stones of good health and should be encouraged.

Early detection of prostate cancer also saves lives, so know your risk factors and get your PSA screening done annually as recommended.
