COLOURED SQUATTERS IN THE CAPE TOWN CITY COUNCIL AND THE CAPE DIVISIONAL COUNCIL AREAS IN 1975 : SOME STATISTICS
1. Introduction:
Under Project
7
of the Urban Problems Research Unit of the University of Cape Town, a considerable amount of data has been collected concerning the demographic, geographic, economic&
housing situation of the Coloured population in the Cape Town area. This information has been computerised and alarge nUiuber of tabulations performed, some of which have been published as U.P.R.U. Data Files 1 and 11.
A special sequence of analyses has been carried out for squatters in the Cape To~n City Council and Cape Divisional Council areas.
The following results were published in Data Files 1:
Table 11: City Council squatters according to household size.
Table 12: Marital state of City Council squatters.
Table 13: Divisional Council squatters at Lourdes Farm:
(a) data according to total family income.
(b) data according to total shack income.
Table 14: Divisional Council squatters at Lourdes Farm:
(a) data according to family size.
(b) data according to shack size.
Table 20: Divisional Council squatters at Lourdes Farm. Birthplace of:
(a) husband (b) wife
(c) couples, where husband and wife come from the same area.
This .paper repeats these (apart from marital status) and gives additional tabulations for six separate City Council areas as well as for nine Divisional Council areas other than Lourdes Farm.

2. Available data:
The data used 'stems from two sources:
(a) Squatters: City Council
This information comes from a survey carried out by the Housing Branch of the City Council in
1975. 7 777
families were surveyed;2-445 of these were used in the general City Council tabulations.
The six areas dealt with separetely are as-follows:
" Kensington
Welcome Estate Surrey Estate ~ Athlorie· .
Landsdowne Retreat

The income data has been verified by employers and may thus be considered reliable, although some informal income has probably been omitted, as will income from second employers in some cases.
The survey covers only those squatter families that have been placed on the City Council Housing waiting list. It quotes family units and house types as they will be when housed by the City Council and not as they are at present.
(b) Squatters : Divisional Council
This information comes from a survey carried out by the Divisional Council in 1975 and covers all areas except Elsies River.
J
280 families were surveyed; 1349
of these were used in the general Divisional Council tabulations. The ten areas dealt withseparately are: Kommctjie

married are married by repute only.
(b) marriaqe date: In the case of a divorced person, the date of divorce rather than marriage may be given. If a person is listed as married, but-date unknown, we may reasonably expect him to be only reputedly married.
(c) birth date: Many of those surveyed do not know: the actual date and quote a different figure every time they are asked. The figures are probably accurate to within two years.

f.. • • ... :.\""
,the head of household' only. ",..' .. '-
"1 ", ... .'
(e) relationship: The relationship is with respect to the head of the household. There are probably many errors, such as
'grandfather' ~ctually being 'father'. Where the relationship
. . ' .
is such that no cod~ for it was given, the person was coded as that which seemed appropriate according to age and sex.
<f) work area: When a person is not working, the code indicates whether he is a pensioner/awaiting grant/alimony/receiving
8upport/unemployed.
5 ..
(g) wage: This is the monthly ,.ragc6 Generally it is to the advantage of the person concerned to deflate his income, so the data must be treated with caution ..
(h) housing type: A distinction is drawn between economic and subeconomic housing and the number of rooms indicated.
living area~r-king area: Where an area is outside the limits of the peninsula, it is coded aG unknown.
(j)
the following classification is used for earners and pen!ioners:(i) Earners - people known to be receiving a salary.
(ii) Known earners - people known to be receiving a salary of known size.
(iii) Pensioners - people known to be receiving a grant.
(iv) .!S..nown pensioners - people known to be receiving a grant of a known size.
(k) household membership is classified into:
(i) Nuclear family - mother, father, son, daughter.
(ii) Extended family - family members not mentioned in (i) (iii) Non-family - household members who are not family members.
J.
!~ope of the studrThe 16 areas covered in this paper are by no means all of the
squatter settlements in the Peninsula area. Excluded, in particular, are the large Coloured settlements at Elsies River and at
Vrygrond. Crossroads, probably the most well-known of all the settlements, is also excluded, because no data is available in respect of African squatters.
In each settlement, the families surveyed constitute a sample of the population there, rather than the entire population. The
sampling rate varies from settlement to settlement and is generally higher for the smaller settlements.
