French Plays Presented

The Amitie Francaise of Johannesburg, deserves congratulation for its commend- able enterprise in presenting three amusing one-act. plays at the New Library Theatre last Saturday night.

Though the acting and production left much to be desired, allowances have to be made for the fact that the society has at- tempted theatrical presentation only once before. As a new venture, Saturday's per- formance merits every encourag·ement, both as giving French citizens in Johannesburg an opportunity to hear their mother tongue on the boards, and as providing a means to those interested for exercising their knowledge of the language.

Choice of cast must necessarily have been limited to fluent speakers of French, but the thought occurred that it would perhaps have been wiser to prepare more interesting, or rather, less trivial fare for the evening's entertainment. Seeing that so much trouble had been taken, it might have been worth presenting one of those light and charming comedies which abound in French litera- ture rather than the duUish "Mariage au Telephone," by Maurice Henniquin, or the near-monologue "A vec sa Mere," byCharles

Folley.

"A Louer Meuble," by Gabriel d'Her- villiez, was a meatier effort, demanding and receiving more from the players and cer- tainly strengthening the wish that the society should attempt something more am- bitious next time.

A large audience showed its appreciation, and the Goldreich Trio provided pleasant music during the intervals.
