Introduction
This bibliography was compiled at the request of the Commit- tee for Biological Research in the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic which operates under the auspices of the South African Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research. The biblio- graphy forms a contribution to a symposium on the biology of Marion Island, held in 1978 (Anon., 1978. S. A/r. J. Sd.
74:451-452).
The scope of the bibliography is limited to articles and books published in the open literature, and dealing wholly or in part with aspects of scientific research at the Prince Edward islands situated in the southern Indian Ocean. The biblio- graphy cxclmtcs maps, in-house reports, newspapers and pamphlets, but theses and fomml departmental bullelh1S are included. The bibliography may not be all-inclusive but it does cover the bulk of the literature published up to, and including, 1979.
References are listed alphabetically by author name. We have used the conventions set out in the "CBE Style Manual (Conference of Biological Editors, 1972)" in presenting authors' names in the list. Articles are in the language of the title given in the bibliography. Journal titles are abbreviated according to the "World List of Scientific Periodicals" and
"Index to South African Periodicals".
Much of the material dates from 1965 when ProfE.M. van Zinderen Bakker led a scientific team to the Prince Edward islands. This resulted in the publication, in 1971, of "Marion and Prince Edward islands; report on the South African biological and geological expedition 1965-1966". This is the basic scientific text on the Prince Edward islands, and it was scrutinized initially in the search for information for the bibliography. The other major sources examined were the reference lists o[ appropriate periodical and joumal articles.
Subsequently, the literature search focused on the "Zoological Record", "Biological Abstracts" and "Science Citation Index''.
