Klerksdorp Rekord, Klerksdorp - Noordwes is ‘n fokuspunt vir die pandemie met getalle wat die hoogte inskiet. Teen druktyd het die provinsie 3 356 aktiewe gevalle met 223 nuwe gevalle én 33 nuwe sterftes.
Volgens die Departement Gesondheid is Matlosana ‘n brandpunt in die provinsie met die meeste aktiewe gevalle (753) en meeste sterftes (466).
Skole in die stad loop erg deur met HTS Klerksdorp wat hopelik die week weer kan oopmaak. Volgens die hoof, Rodwell Miles, het die skool verlede week gesluit omdat 18 mense positief getoets het. Dit sluit 15 leerlinge, 2 onderwysers en ‘n “screener” in.
Volgens die hoof kan die getal selfs hoër wees, omdat kinders nie hul positiewe toets- uitslae bekendmaak nie in die vrees dat hulle skoolwerk kan verloor.
“Dit stel egter die ander kinders en onder- wysers in gevaar. Ek doen ‘n beroep op leer- linge om eerlik te wees,” het hy gesê.
Die skool sou toe wees tot Donderdag 13 Mei, maar die datum is onderhewig aan uitslae wat nog verwag word.
Hoërskool Wesvalia se hele matriekklas was teen druktyd in isolasie by die huis na- dat van die leerlinge positief getoets het. Die adjunkhoof, Johan Minnie, het dit bevestig.
Volgens Minnie is die aksie voorkomend om ander leerlinge en onderwysers te beskerm.
Die leerlinge behoort Maandag 17 Mei weer by die skool te wees.
Hoërskool Schoonspruit se waarnemende hoof, Anca Swart, het op Dinsdag 11 Mei op Facebook ouers van die skool meegedeel dat ‘n leerling wat die afgelope naweek met die netbalbus na Fochville gereis het, positief getoets het. “Alle leerlinge wat op die bus was moet vir vyf dae isoleer en indien hulle simptome toon, moet hulle getoets word,’’

Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - North West Health MEC Madoda Sambatha urged registered health care workers in the province to get vaccinated without delay.
He said that since the vaccination pro- gramme was launched last month, only half of the health workers who registered for the vaccine, were vaccinated. On Monday 17 May, the second phase of vaccination of individuals over 60 starts but with the high number of health care workers still not vaccinated, it can be problematic, the MEC said.
Healthcare workers are therefore urged to follow-up with the Sisonke portal to, if already registered, refresh registration. Check your text messages (you may have missed a mes- sage sending you a fresh link to the Sisonke portal, sent from 26 April 2021 onward).

Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - Mike Demetrious was known as the smiling, helpful owner of the Pick n Pay in Son- gloed. This pillar in the Hellenic com- munity passed away unexpectedly this week.
According to Andreas Demetrious, his father, Mike (75), passed away at home on Tuesday 11 May.
“It was so unexpected. My dad went to the gym yesterday and he was so active.
He was supposed to have a knee opera- tion and he still walked every day. He had comorbidities and he had a triple bypass 15 years ago, but he wasn’t sick. It could have been a stroke or an aneurism. We don’t know yet.”
He describes his father as a top busi- nessman, much loved by the communi- ty.
Andreas wrote op Facebook: “He is gone now it’s hard to believe. This man is our dad who we will never see, but we will see him again this we know. The day will come when it’s time to go. So we’ll hold him dear and close to our hearts,
‘cause the day we meet we know we will never be torn apart.”
Jose de Achadinha, owner of Over- land, wrote in a tribute “RIP Uncle Mike, PnP Songloed. Great businessman in Klerksdorp that will always be remem- bered”.
Mike had three sons and a daughter.
No funeral details were available at the time of going to press.

Die raad is bekommerd oor sosiale byeen- komste, kerkbyeenkomste en konserte wat al hoe meer voorkom en broeiplekke vir die virus is.
Die premier, Job Mokgoro, het aangekondig
dat die ignorering van regulasies tot ‘n fiasko kan ly. Volgens hom kan hy sien hoe moeg mense vir die pandemie is wanneer hy van dorp na dorp ry, want regulasies word nie toegepas nie.
“Die inentingsprogram is nou beskikbaar vir inwoners wat ouers as 60 jaar is met re- gistrasie wat reeds begin het.

This is what a Scottish DJ said to Klerksdorp Record after the newspaper helped to create awareness about his search for his mother that he hasn’t seen or had contact with since he was nine years old. Ewan’s search touched the hearts of many as his plight was repeated by various publications. The family lived in Klerksdorp where his dad worked on the mines and he lost touch with his mom when his parents split up.
The good news came on Friday 7 May when Ewan Arnott managed to get his mom’s correct phone number from a stranger who read his story. His e-mail address was published with his story.
“It only needed one person to know her whereabouts and then everything fell in place. My mom is staying in Johannes- burg and she is now called Janis Ste- venson. A lady from Bela-Bela was so touched by the story that she went to see
mom and put us in touch,” he said.
After getting her correct number, he called. He was very nervous, but determined to get in touch.
“It was as if time has disap- peared. We talked about how the time apart was now gone as if it was no problem. I told her how much I love her and how I’ve never stopped loving her. I told her about all the memories of how she would make sure I was not hungry going to school. She always made sure I was fed and had a roof over my head even when times were hard. My mother was quite understandably emo- tional but she told me she thought of me every single day since I left South Africa in 1990.”
“Now that we’ve made contact, the plan is to keep in touch, of course, and I am planning to either fly to SA or fly my mother over to UK. My mother has 3 grandkids in Scotland and her future is here because she expressed her desire to return to the land of her birth after over
Post Office reopens soon
Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - A total of 27 post office branches across the country reopened following extensive negotiation with landlords, Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams announced this week.
According to Donald Mokgobinyane of the Post Office regional office, the Freemanville branch (Songloed) will reopen soon. The branch was also closed due to arrears in rent.
“We have paid the R104 000 owed and moved out of the Pick n Pay building into a new location across the road. We expect the electricity to be connected soon and systems connected and then we can re-open. This will be good for the residents as they had to travel to Flamwood and the City Mall to use postal services,” he said.
Many Post Offices are still closed and, according to the minister, negotiations con- tinue with landlords of the remaining few Post Offices that are closed; they will re-open as soon as agreement is reached with property owners. This is expected to be within the next few weeks.
The Ministry of Communications and Digital Technologies, as the shareholder, continues to work closely with the Post Office to strengthen the executive management of the entity. The entity recently appointed Nomkhita Mona as the new Chief Executive Officer of the South African Post Office for a five-year term. The position had been vacant since 2019.
“The Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent economic downturn had a marked effect on the revenues of the Post Office. The Post Office has implemented long-term initiatives to diversify its income.
“These have started to show results, and the Post Office has also identified quick solutions that will improve its income in the short-term,”
added Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams.

‘n lang pad na herstel. Maar ons glo en vertrou dat dinge nou net beter kan gaan ons grootste worry is van ons af.”

Orkney protesting against an increase in crime in this town and a lacklustre police station, more residents will take to the streets again this week.
This time, the Orkney United Community Forum comprising of residents who don’t want to be affi- liated to any political party, will march to the police station “to take our town back’’.
According to Audrey Bierman, a representative of the forum, they have been granted permission for the march and anyone interested in joining them on Friday 14 May can gather at Ceronio Park from 13:00.
Like the DA, the residents are up- set about “various security problems in town’’.
The DA handed a memorandum over to Lt Col Hans Badenhorst, the station commissioner on Friday 7 May.
Cllr Chris Bester said the DA is concerned that the shortage of resources at the police station and a lack of training to respond to criminal activities are causing residents to no longer feel safe in their town.

Klerksdorp Record, Klerksdorp - A local eatery will present the first Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in Klerksdorp to coincide with the worldwide rides on 23 May.
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride unites classic and vintage style motorcycle riders all over the world to raise funds and aware- ness for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health.
Rheinholdt Kade, owner of Roast, rode on his own in 2020 during the height of the pandemic and he decided all the distinguished gentlemen of Klerksdorp should take part in 2021.
He invites owners of classic motorcycles to take part, dress up in classic attire and be dapper on the day.

Riding dapper for a cause
Macrovest Centre at 09:00 and the ride will start at 10:00. It will also finish there.
“The bikes will follow a route of 35 km through the city with three regrouping points.
Residents are invited to look at these motor- cycles as they pass by,” he told Klerksdorp Record.
“The main purpose of the ride is to raise awareness for prostate cancer and men’s mental health. There is no entry fee, but peo-
ple are encouraged to donate. Riders can also be sponsored. Lots of prizes are at stake.”
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was founded in Sydney, Australia, by Mark Hawwa.
“It was inspired by a photo of TV Show Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit. Mark decided a themed ride would be a great way of connecting niche motorcycle enthusiasts and communities while raising funds to support the men in our lives.”

Klerksdorp Record, Alabama - Isuzu SA in conjunction with Westvaal Isuzu Klerksdorp answered the call for an irrigation system at Alabama Primary School’s vegetable garden.
This garden supplies fresh produce to the school’s feeding scheme and the school also sells veggies to educators and the public.
The garden has been running for the past 12 years and Isuzu has been involved for the past three months.
According to the deputy principal, Floresca Adams, the system reduced the school’s service account and it also inspired learners to start their own gardens at home.
“The garden produces tomatoes, spinach, beetroot and sweet potatoes among others and it’s organic,” he said.
Riaan de Jager of RNA Construction built the system and Isuzu intends to stay in- volved.

Yes, children need sport to stay active and healthy but we should stop thinking life is normal and that we can carry on as if nothing is wrong.
This is a worldwide pandemic.

Schools should never have al-

With one of them being investiga- ted for corruption of R2billion, (cases alrea- dy known in public) who will still have to face a charge of submitting a falsifi ed report in council, two of them owing the municipa- lity some R34 000 each, one who caused the municipality being embroiled in R17m defamation law suite, and interfered in the SCM process to benefi t the biggest looter of all times, but most of all that the most knowledgeable member resigned from the group.
The big question is what will still come out in the wash when the fi nger pointing stage starts after war was declared on corruption and other crimes?
Watching the watch dog
Ezekiel Hoti, Lebaleng - The newly established formal settlement extension 6 has 712 allocations with approximately 1500 people in need of the residential sites.
It was agreed that older people, disabled and orphans be given fi rst priority on allocations which hasn’t happened due to the operating of three paral- lel committees on site.
This has created problems of duplicate allocations in 1 stand that is believed to be caused by lack of monitoring and possible corruption between some municipal offi cials and the 3 parallel committees as some community members allege that they are charged R400 each to be given residential sites.
On the intervention lead by Mrs Mapule Make, the service delivery primary offi ce however failed the attempts to resolve the ongoing believed crisis on the matter.
Mr Ompie Sebekedi, manager housing depart-
ment is currently busy trying to deal with the matter in the interest of the community as those who will not be able to get spaces to be allocated will automati- cally be moved to extension 7.
Community alleges that the volunteers are work- ing in hand with the town planner on allocation of stands and charging them R400 per household claiming it is used to clean the area of allocation which is an indirect selling of stands.
Ward committees are part of the process and fail to oversee the process from the ground where it is found that some foreign nationals are given 2 - 3 stands in exchange for cash.
The aforementioned matters could cause insta- bility as community is not satisfi ed with the whole processes.
The matter remains monitored and deeper inves- tigations continues pending proper establishment of the municipality’s reaction and other stakeholders aff ected.
