Many people assume that a construction manager and a construction project manager are one and the same and other professionals involved in a project sometimes assume that because they have certain project manager responsibilities that they are the project manager of the project. Hypothesis - Construction management in modern times is a challenging profession and their role within a construction project is essential for the successful execution of a project. Where do construction managers and construction project managers fit into the professional team involved in a project.

Hypothesis – There are similarities between construction managers and construction project managers, but they are currently unclear.

What are the modern day systems and programmes used within the construction industry today? – There are a number of modern day systems

The application of knowledge-based expert systems and other visualization techniques are an indispensable tool for CM and CPM. Microsoft Project – This is undoubtedly one of the most important programs used by CMs and CPMs. This is a very valuable program as CMs and CPMs will have to make presentations to other professional team members or stakeholders involved in the project.

Methvin – Program designed and developed for use in the construction industry applicable to CMs and CPMs. These are programs known as Computer Aided Drafting (Auto CAD) These programs are primarily used by designers (i.e. Architects and Engineers) so will not be mentioned in great detail as CMs and CPMs will not. So it is not only suitable for designers but also for CMs and CPMs and multiple groups in different locations are able to work on projects simultaneously.

This chapter lists the main types of software available for CM and CPM, their uses and benefits, and the cost of purchasing them. In order to maintain or gain a competitive advantage, CMs and CPMs must familiarize themselves with. 66 The programs currently used by CMs and CPMs in the construction industry are relevant and professionals are effectively using the programs to improve their capabilities.

Effective use of software programs is absolutely necessary for CMs and CPMs, but one cannot simply use all available programs to do one's job. The initial hypothesis stated that CMs and CPMs are not exposed to the software programs available in the developed world and underutilize them, making them not as efficient as they could be. This hypothesis is false, CMs and CPMs in South Africa are of a very high standard and to do the job adequately programs are used effectively.

To remain competitive in the industry, professionals need to be up-to-date on the programs and software they use so that CMs and CPMs make adequate use of the available software and realize its true potential.
