we ar told. " had, from the start, a strikingly happy effect upon him."
He wa an infant prodigy of no usual order a w~ find that at the ~~e of three he wa alreadv handling a
quarter izc vi0lin, ancl nw king hi tutor ga p with the dexterity of hi natural talent.
At the age of seYPr! he made ~Ji
fir t public appearance, and played on a half ize violin. and at the age of thirteen we learn that he attained to full iz . We also learn that hi
tudent career wa not all "pie," and that h w nt one better than Handel (who wa di covered in night attire at the clavichord) by finding it nece - sary to practice hi in trument under the b d clothe .
Through various vicissitudes he eventually rea hed the capable hand of Prof e sor Auer with whom he . tudicd, and when he left him hi career proved one Ion()" succes ion of brilliant triumphs.
J a ha Heifetz has a mo t amazing technique. o living viol ini t po e se uch ab olute flawle~ ne , and he stand on the platform in a calm, cold, di pa ionate way and perform hi miracles of d xterity o that there are some who believe he i without emotion and merely wallow in beauty of tone. Thi idea i , of cour e, quite erroneou , a on n ed but to hear him playing Achron' beautiful Hebrew Melody and the extraordinary rich tone of hi G tring in other \~ork , to reali hi d pth of feeling and hi magical arti try.
COLU'\IBIA RECORDS.
"0 Pea eful ight" and "O Hu h Thee My Baby ' (4298). The ar two unaccompanied part ong_ r n- d red in an unforgettable manner by the ali bury ino· r . The hl nding of the voice i as near perfect as one can hope for.
" In this hour of oftened p len- dour '' and "Italian alad" (9194 . Thi_ i~ another choral record ung b_
the famou heffield Choir, conducted by ir Henry Coward. Tlie latter i partieularl inter ting a it i a
kit on th u of Italian term in mu i . Both numbers are well sung althouc:rh the fir t i rather sugary.
William Murdoch playincr the Appa ionata onata in F Minor by Beethoven (L.1906). Thi i a very romantic rend ring of a ery popular work. Murdoch play it with much fibre and vim, and although I am not prepared to agree with hi ideas of interpretation, I mu t onf that it i a fine recordinc:r and i to appeal.
Waltz in F Major. and Etude in A Flat (Chopin) (D.1567). William Murdoch again, but thi time in Chopin. They are very bri k and lean-cut performance . Perhap ju t a little too harp for the deli cat Chopin.
The Vicar of Mirth, Vivian Fo t r in the " Par on and the Charle~ton "
(4265). Thi i rather an amu_ing . peakino- record, ad i very learly enunciated. The lectrical proces has d ne wonders in that direction.
• Cavalleria Rusticana," Voi Lo apete and i ~i D'Arte from Tosca, _uncr bv Eva Turn r (L.1836). Th Voi Lo' ._apete i rather fine. but the latter ha not recorded well.
P RLOPHO~ -E RECORD
Trio in D :Minor for violin, cello and piano (Mendels~ohn). Played by the Edith Lorand Trio (E.10563) . Thi i one of the be t r cording of it kind I have heard. The piano and cello particularly have recorded ex- ccllentlv.
