After selection of the students, the predetermined number of students will be notified of the following: unconditionally selected (candidates who hold a matric certificate and meet the entry requirements), provisionally selected (candidates selected on the basis of grade 11 results provided they pass their matric certificate with the minimum entry requirements), waiting list and rejected list (candidates who are not eligible). Of the intake in 2006, only a hundred succeeded in 2007 to move on to the 3rd year of study.

BACKGROUND TO THE RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT

  • BENEFITS OF THE NURSING PROGRAMME
  • NURSING PROGRAMME COMPETENCIES
  • FACTORS IMPACTING ON THE QUALITY OF NURSING SERVICE
  • CONCLUSION

While facing serious challenges, including critical staff shortages in some of the hospitals, Houseman stresses that neither Tygerberg Hospital nor any other hospital in the Western Cape is or will be closed for emergencies. Work-related stress is estimated to affect at least one-third of the workforce each year.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Selection Criteria

After the selection of the students, the predetermined number of students will be communicated in the following way: 'Unconditionally selected' (candidates who hold an entrance exam and meet the admission requirements), 'Preliminarily selected' (candidates who have been awarded a mark of 9 selected on the condition that they pass their matric certificate with the minimum entry requirements), 'Waiting List' and 'Rejected List' (candidates who are not eligible). The evaluation of fair selection includes both psychometric and contextual aspects of the selection mechanism (Lens Linn.

DEFINITION OF DROP-OUT

  • Voluntary and involuntary drop-out
  • Financial implications of high drop-out

Dropping out of higher education can take place at many different times during the students' academic career. The costs associated with failing students or students dropping out of the system can be thought of as "wasted resources".

Figure 3.1: Student study cycle dropout points (Source: Gouws & Van der Merwe, 2004:254

REVIEW OF THE VARIABLES INFLUENCING DROP-OUT

The high dropout rates are unacceptable and represent a huge waste of financial and human resources each year (RSA, 2001:25).

ACADEMIC QUALITY STUDENT PERFORMANCE, ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

  • Lecturing staff support to students

According to Forrest et al., institutions involved in the education of nursing students must emphasize that the primary role of the clinical teacher is to meet the needs of the students. SANC is accredited as an Education and Training Quality Assurance Authority (ETQA) within the meaning of section 5 (i) (a) (ii) of the South African Qualifications Act (Act No. 58 of 1995). As a quality assurance body, SANC ensures that quality healthcare is provided to all citizens of the country.

The availability of sufficient and competent healthcare workers with the right skills is central to the success of the transformation process of the healthcare system in South Africa. The 1997 White Paper on the Transformation of the Health System in South Africa established a number of key principles for the planning, production and management of human resources. Evaluate the suitability of the existing practice areas for the healthcare context in South Africa.

QUALITY AND THE COST-EFFECTIVENESS OF TEACIDNG AND LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Identify the categories of nurses required to provide cost-effective health care of a high standard. Aligning the scope of practice of different categories of nurses in accordance with the needs of health care delivery. Evaluate nurse education and training in terms of appropriateness, cost-effectiveness, core competencies, and standards for practice.

If a student fails and cannot be promoted to the next level of studies, most of the students then cancel the course and try to be successful in another course in another faculty. According to Shivambu (2005:0nline), the number of students in higher education has grown exponentially during the last 10 years, but the throughput and graduation rates have not improved. MacKinnon (2000:0nline), is of the opinion that attraction and retention of higher degree studies is important for all universities and is part of the 'brand', which distinguishes the universities from other further and higher education providers.

QUALITY ASSURANCE IN ASSESSMENTIDATA

  • General assessment strategy required by programmes

The final summative assessment must cover many of the theoretical, practical and reflective skills expected of students for the course/subject/module. All summative assessments (methods and instruments) must be moderated either internally or externally, depending on the level of the course, before assessment in terms of the assessment design and marking criteria. For summative assessment where more than one marker is involved, at least 60% of the final marks must be moderated via a system of internal moderation to check the reliability of the marking.

For summative assessment of courses at the final level of the qualifications (excluding qualifications awarded through thesis assessment only), external moderators/assessors must be appointed to examine at least 60% of the credits at the final level at which a qualification has been awarded. For example, in the summative assessment of a Bachelor's degree at level 7 of the NQF, at least 120 credits are examined and moderated externally. For final level subjects/courses/modules, there must be external moderation of the final summative assessment.

  • CONCLUSION

The purpose of a questionnaire according to Polit and Hungler is a series of questions in a document used to collect self-report information from respondents through self-administration. According to Remenyi, Money & Twite interval scales facilitate meaningful statistics when calculating means, standard deviation, and Pearson correlation coefficients. Reliability, according to Uys and Basson, means the degree of consistency or accuracy with which an instrument measures the attribute for which it was designed.

According to Uys and Basson validity means the degree to which an instrument measures what it is supposed to measure. 34; The researcher becomes a participant in the action and the process of change itself becomes the object of research." According to Collis and Hussey it is essential that the data used be very specific and accurate.

CHAPTERS: ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS

INTRODUCTION

ANALYSIS METHOD

  • VALIDATION SURVEY RESULTS
  • DATA FORMAT
  • PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS
  • INFERENTIAL STATISTICS
  • ASSISTANCE TO RESEARCHER
  • SAMPLE

Descriptive statistics (Uni-variate analysis) were used to establish the frequency distribution of all the categorical variables. The chi-square tests for equal proportions were performed on statements to indicate whether one choice was preferred over another. In cases where the expected frequencies were above 5 for the different groups, comparisons were made with respect to gender and race using the Pearson chi-square test.

Usually the analysis will focus on the outcome of the total sample and mostly on descriptive statistics. The final report written by the researcher was validated and checked by a qualified statistician to exclude misleading interpretations. The target group are the Nursing Science students of the CPUT Health and WelIness Sciences Department who enrolled in 2005 at the Western Cape College of Nursing.

Race

Highest level of education

It should be noted that a large percentage of respondents (43.3%) did not indicate how long they have been in the nursing profession and 38.3% indicated that they have been in the nursing profession for 1-5 years. The main reason given by the respondents as motivation to apply to the nursing program is that they like to work with people (41.7%).

Too much theory I practical

Is teaching facilities adequate?

Do you need additional support?

Are the students provided with adequate notes?

The respondents mostly felt that they were informed about test/examination forms, clinical hours, etc.

Do lecturers give feedback after tests?

INFERENTIAL STATISTICS

  • RELIABILITY TESTING
  • CHI-SQUARE TEST FOR EQUAL PROPORTIONS
  • COMPARISONS

There is evidence that the ratios for some of the different statements were not the same. A chi-square test for equal proportions shows that Ho: Pj'=P2 should be rejected, so P1*P2. • This means that a much higher/lower proportion of respondents indicated one category and not one of the other categories. The expected values in the contingency table cells for these variables are in most cases lower than 5, making the Pearson chi-square an incomplete test.

Statistically significantly more women (76.3%) than men (33.3%) indicated that they had negative learning experiences while studying in a nursing program. Statistically significantly more men (75.0%) than women (41.5%) stated that they are equipped with appropriate notes. Regarding race, statistically significantly more people of color (75.8~/o) than blacks (44.4%) and statistically significantly more blacks had negative experiences.

  • CONCLUSION

In order to improve the throughput rate of the students, a strategy should be adopted that balances the quality and cost-effectiveness of the program. New and innovative methodologies must be developed to assess the 'readiness' of the learners for the nursing programme. To determine the determination of each component of the evaluation process and required subminimum.
