This research study was conducted to determine the effect of using a show and tell method on students' speaking ability on a short functional text at SMP Negeri 1 Jember. The researcher used pre-test and post-test to collect the data. The instrument used a speaking test. The speaking test was conducted in th experimental and control class of ninth-grade students. From the result score in the pre-test and post-test, the experimental class students have increased their speaking ability. It was in line with the previous research conducted by Nurvitasyari in her research entitled “The Use of Show and Tell (S&T) Method in Teaching Vocabulary at The Second Year Students of

Junior High School (SMP) Negeri 4 Galesong Selatan Kabupaten Takalar”

that after implementing show and tell method, students score in post-test were higher than pre-test score.39 Most students pay attention to their speaking skills after being given the material and treatment using show and tell method.

It was supported by previous research from Rahmi with the title “ The Effect of Show and Tell Method Toward Students Speaking Skill at X Grade of Islamic Senior High School Maninjau” that the students seemed more enthusiastic to involve themselves in show and tell rather than when the teacher asked them to tell something without showing the things.40 Most students speak with proper pronunciation, have enough courage to speak in front of their friends, and have a large vocabulary. It was in line with Anisah Fitriani entitled "Show and Tell Method in Teaching Speaking Skills at SMAN 2 Palopo" In her article conveyed that after being provided treatment using show and tell method, these students had the motivation to learn to speak, they were more confident to speak English in front of their classmate.41 It could be seen from the result of the pre-test and post-test. The mean pre-test score in the experimental class is 64,93, and the pot-test is 74,40. It means that using show and tell method can enhance students' speaking skills on short functional text. Meanwhile, based on the pre-test and post-test results, some students can increase their speaking ability in the control class, but most are still poor in pronunciation and lack vocabulary. It can be seen from the mean score in the pre-test is 62,34 and the post-test is 66,90.

From the data analysis using the SPSS 26 version, the result of the independent sample t-test is a significance value less than the significance level. Based on hypothesis testing, the Ha is accepted. It means there is a significant effect of using show and tell method to enhance students speaking skills n short functional text for the ninth grade at SMP Negeri 1 Jember. Then it can be seen from the score taught with show and tell method is higher than that taught without show and tell method. This research was in line with the previous research by Nurul Hafidzoh Dalimunthe in her thesis entitled entitled

“Improving Students’ Speaking Skill by Using Show and Tell Method at the second grade of MTs PP. Tarbiyah Islamiyah Hajoran” that there was an effect of using show and tell method on students’ speaking ability, it also can enlarge students knowledge, enrich the student’s vocabulary.42

The students were interested and felt enjoyable applying show and tell method in the class. It was evidenced by their participation in the speaking class, discussions, performing, and showing the objects to their classmates. It was supported by Musfiroh that show and tell an activity to show a favourite object and then tell or describe it to the audience. The purpose of show and tell is that what is shown is what is explained.43 It was also related to research conducted by Fany Angly et al. under the title “Applying for Show and Tell Method to Enhance Student’s Speaking Ability at Eight Grade Students of SMP Singosari Delitua.” Their result conveyed that students respond and take part in the class. They are interested and feel happy in applying show and tell

method.44 Thus, students who applied for the show and tell method got higher scores on short functional text. At the same time, students who had not applied show and tell method got a lower score on short functional text.

From the discussion explanation above, applying the show and tell method successfully improved students’ speaking skills. Besides, one of the advantages of show and tell method is effectively developing the ability to speak in public. The ability to speak in public is one of the characteristics of self-confidence. It means that using show and tell method not only increase five components of speaking, which are grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and pronunciation but also can increase students' confidence to speak in front of the class. Therefore, the show and tell method was related to the student’s daily lives. The more the method or material related to the student, the more the students would understand. The more the students would be easy to understand the material, the students would get better the score. Thus, the researcher suggested to the English teachers to use show and tell method to make the teaching English speaking more exciting and make the students more active in the learning process. In addition, the teachers must consider the constraints on the method so that the studentsl achieve better learning achievement.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION A. Conclusion

Based on the research study, the researcher could find the differences between the experimental and control classes from that research study. It showed that experimental class got a higher score than control class. The data calculated on the SPSS 26 version showed a pre-test score in the experimental class was 64,93, then an increase in the post-test score was 74,40. Besides, th pre-test scores in the control class were 62,34 and the post-test score were 66,90. Then, the result of hypotheses testing and discussion about the effect of using show and tell method on students speaking skills for ninth graders in SMP Negeri 1 Jember, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using show and tell method on students’ speaking ability at SMP Negeri 1 Jember. The resulting score between the experimental class and control class have differences. The experimental class got a higher score than the control class. Besides, it can be seen from the result of the independent sample t-test analysis that the significance is <0,002. It is lower than the significance level of 0,05. So it can be concluded that the students speaking skills of the experimental group were significantly increased. By applying show and tell method, the students increase their speaking ability. In addition, aspects of speaking that increased after applying show and tell method were grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and pronunciation.
