A random sample of 64 BB sheep from the Chalok Sheep Breeding Center in Setiu, Terengganu (a Department of Veterinary Services nucleus breeding farm) was evaluated. The animals were managed on raised housing, fed grass ad libitum and given concentrates. BB sheep have a typical

“Roman” nose. Ears are pointed and the inside of the ears is black. Animals have a wide black

marking running on each side from the upper part of the nose to the crown of the head. Legs are long and quite straight. The tail is long, reaching the top of the hocks. The specimens generally have coarse hair coat. Body color varies from light fawn to reddish brown, and the underbelly is black. Both sexes are polled. In general proportion, they resemble a typical medium-sized sheep breed. Weight and conformation measurements of BB sheep are given in table

Rumusan Projek

The first two months after arrival at the farm, nearly half of them were infected with Contagious ecthyma. A few cases of mid pregnancy abortion also occurred. This is may be due to the transportation stress and improper nutrition regime compared to its original country. The group also has suffered 4 mortalities, including 1 buck (6.25% mortality). Green forage is given in addition to soy hull pellet as an extra energy and protein source. Minerals, vitamins and probiotics are also supplied in the feed. Drinking water is treated with supplements too. The goats are allowed moderate exercise daily by letting them to free graze for a few hours in the morning to prevent them from being inactive.

Rumusan Projek

The production performance, morphological characteristics and adaptation of the newly import- ed Shami goats were studied for 3 years under local environment condition with a medium input management. The milk production and kids growth performance need to be evaluate further con- sidering they were newly brought into this country and still adjusting. On the other hand, Shami goats seem to adapt well to the local environment conditions including the climate, diseases, management and feedstuff. Thus, there is a potential to exploit the genetic productive traits of this breed to enhance milk and meat production in Malaysia.

Average body length, stance, wither height, rump height, girth measurement and body circumference are 94.91±23.0cm, 56.74±6.5cm, 77.07±6.11cm, 78.59±7.12cm, 84.72±8.88cm and 99.98±10.78cm respectively. Average milk production for first lactation with 4 months suckling period was 504.67 ml/day. Average kidding percentage for the whole study duration was 79.5% which 23.5% of them were twin birth. The average birth weight was 3.41 kg for male and 2.82kg for female kids. The mature body weight was 57.674±23.84kg for male and 50.50±13.62kg for female in average. Average daily weight gain (g/day) for 30, 60, 90, 200 and 300 days were 0.24, 0.20, 0.10, and 0.10 respectively. The milk production and kids growth performance need to be evaluate further considering they were newly brought into this country and still adjusting. On the other hand, Shami goats seem to adapt well to the local environment conditions including the climate, diseases, management and feedstuff. Thus, there is a potential to exploit the genetic productive traits of this breed to enhance milk and meat production in Malaysia.

Rumusan Projek

Shami goat is a dual-purpose goat originated from Syria. It is widely spread into Cyprus, Jordan, Turkey, Israel and other Mediterranean countries. For over 40 years, it has been improved through genetic improvement selection for milk and meat. They are of the Nubian type and are usually red or brown but can also be seen in pied or grey. The animals can be either horned or polled and are long haired. It is considered as large breed which withers measurement is about 78 cm, body circumference is about 97-99 cm. Adult live weight is about 67 kg for females and 85 kg of males. The breed is considered as one of the best dual-purpose breeds of the Middle East under semi-intensive or intensive production systems. It combines prolificacy with high milk production and a growth of kids comparable exclusively meat breeds (DAD-IS 2004).

Rumusan Projek

Katjang goat is an indigenous breed of goat in Malaysia. Katjang goat is found in small size in several parts in Malaysia and it is considered to be at risk. Katjang goat is a meat type and as described by DVS, it possesses morphological characteristics of thin black coloured coat, some- times with white patches. Average birthweight is 1.5 kg with with mature weight of 25 kg for males and 20 kg for females. Average daily weight gain of Katjang goat is 55 gm/day. The population and distribution of Katjang goats in Malaysia are difficult to determine due to no proper research survey being done on Katjang goats. As an indigenous goat, Katjang possesses the natural characteristics of heat and tick tolerance in local climate. Although their production may be relatively low compared to other goat breeds in Malaysia that results in declining economic interest, indigenous breed often have unique adaptive qualities.

Department of Veterinary Services carries out the research project to conserve this indigenous breed under The Sciencefund R&D under Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry research project funding. This project funding costs RM 237,000 for 2 years period. On farm in-situ is being set up at National Institute of Veterinary Biotechnology to accommodate 50 Katjang females and 3 males. A national survey will be done to get the data on population and distribution of Katjang goat,

RumusanProjek

Sixteen does naturally bred were used in this study. Blood was collected through jugular vein fortnightly from day 0 until day 42 of pregnancy. To screen the serum protein for a potential biomarker(s), the sera were subjected to two dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) and the prote- ome maps obtained were analyzed using Image Master 2D Platinum 7.0. Any differentially expressed proteins were subjected to Maldi-Tof/Tof analysis for protein identification. In order to identify PAG spot on the proteome map, immunoblotting was performed and the spot was validat-

ed by LC-MS approach. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA where p value less than

0.05 was considered significant.

From the 2DE proteome map, there were four proteins detected as differentially expressed. Interestingly, the significantly expressed proteins with the match id of 196, 51, 223 & 239 were detected as early as week 2 of gestation. Compared to week 0 of pregnancy, these four proteins seemed up regulated in 2 fold of expression dynamic on the week 2 of pregnancy. Pregnancy associated glycoprotein (PAG), which was detected using immunoblotting, only appeared in the sixth week of gestation and not detected in non-pregnant samples. Based on the LC-MS result, the protein spot was confirmed as PAG.

RumusanProjek

Early detection of pregnancy is advantageous to breeders. However, the early pregnancy detection tools currently in used are expensive, laboratory-based and not efficient enough to be applied in the field and applicable to farmers. Thus, there is a need to find a biomarker which not only can detect pregnancy but also could be applied to the livestock on the field. To search for early pregnancy biomarker, proteomic approach was used in this study. When goat sera at day 14 of gestation were resolved by using two dimensional gel electrophoresis, five differentially expressed proteins were detected. Four of the proteins were identified as albumin precursors, immunoglobulin lambda light chain and zinc-alpha-2-glycoprotein. Pregnancy associated glycoprotein-1 was detected by using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry and the protein

was validated by immunoblotting. These proteins have potential to be used as a biomarker for early pregnancy detection, however more extensive analysis are needed to validate its possibility.
