PART I : INTRODUCTION
Technology has brought a significant change in the education world. The use of technology in the education sector is widely spreading now, it is not only in big cities but also in remote areas. The rapid development of technology has greatly improved the access to learning in various media. Technologies that can be used in the learning process are varied, such as computers, television, radio, films, overhead projectors, videos, tape recorders, and others.
Currently, computer technology is no longer used only as a computation and word processing (word processor) but also as a multi-media learning tool that provides various interesting applications in learning. Educational practitioners have to produce creative and innovative works so that students can learn something more interesting. Besides, by using technology, the students will access learning materials easily and choose them based on their respective knowledge and their level. Moreover, the use of the internet as a learning medium enables students to learn independently without only depending on the material at school or campus. Hence, the efforts to integrate the Internet into the teaching process are increasing and becoming a part of the learning tool.
Computer technology has also affected English learning media. The development of the use of computers in language learning is known as Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). The emergence of CALL has given contributed to the English teaching process. CALL indirectly promotes the interactions in all aspects of learning such as both student and teacher, students with other students, or students with their teaching own materials. CALL in its development is expected to become a language learning system that supports creativity that can help in a technology-based teaching system. It also increases students’ motivation to follow the English teaching process and encourages them to be active and innovative in using technology. Inline, the efforts to integrate the computer into English Language Teaching (ELT) in various are also increasing. In this era, a new computer has been created with smaller, faster, and easier tools to operate by teachers. The software has also been designed to load multimedia, video, sound, and text which these all capacities allow students to interact with learning material in a fun way. The computer also offers the flexibility to acquire individual learning materials, to help select content that suits their learning styles, and provide a communicative learning environment.
learning both online and offline. Several websites are created specifically for learning English such as www.britishcouncil.org, https://www.esl-lab.com/, https://www.englishclub.com, etc. Some various social media are also available, particularly for learning English such as Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, and so on. These media present English learning materials such as vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, writing, reading, listening, speaking and so on. Facebook provides some learning accounts such as the LearnEnglish-British Council, BBC Learning English, VOA Learning English, and many more. For Instagram, many English educational accounts can be followed for free, for example, BBC Leaning English (@bbclearningenglish), CambridgeEnglish (@cambridgeenglish), Learn English with Jack (@tofluency), and others. Meanwhile, on Twitter, you can see English learning accounts such as BBC Learning English (@bbcle), Rolls of the Tongue (@RolloffTongue), English121 (@ learnenglish121), and so on. With all media available, students will easily find various learning sources which are more attractive and interesting. As for the teachers, this can help them in making additional material as a supplement to the existing material.
However, the rapid spread of English learning media on the internet is not equal to its users. The use of learning applications as a teaching aid is still very limited due to the lack of knowledge of its implementation. Besides, with huge applications available, it is quite confusing to choose which one is the best and appropriate to the level of the learner. People use social media is still limited for either communication or entertainment. Facebook, Instagram and Whatapps are the media commonly used in daily life. If these media could be an additional material to learn English either in the classroom or out the classroom so that the learning process would be more optimal. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce the media to both the students and the teachers. Thus, this module was created as an introduction to learning media on the internet, particularly in learning English on Instagram.
