NAME:
1. The name of the Society shall be the Melbourne University Medical Students' Society.
MEMBERSHIP:
2. The membership shall include all un- dergraduate students studying in the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Melbourne and such others admitted or honorary members as specified by the regulations of the Students' Repre- sentative Council of the University of Melbourne.
OBJECTS:
3. The objects of the Society shall be:- (a) To serve, promote and co-ordinate the interests in all respects of students enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine, (b) to co-operate whenever possible with other students enrolled in medical faculties in all Australian Universities on matters of current medical student interest,
(c) to co-operate whenever possible with other faculty societies either direct- ly or by way of the Students' Repre- sentative Council on matters of mutual interest,
(d) To co-operate whenever possible with the Directors of the Student Health Scheme in the University of Melbourne.

EXECUTIVE AND GENERAL COMMITTEE:
4. The affairs of the Society shall be controlled by an Executive and General Committee which shall be responsible to the members of the faculty society by the presentation of a Secretary's and Treasurer's report at the Annual General Meeting.
5. The executive shall comprise:- (a) President.
(b) Chairman.
(c) Vice-Chairman.
(d) Secretary.
(e) Treasurer.
6. The Executive shall be responsible for:
(a) the general administration of the Society's affairs in accordance with the objects as set out in section 3 of the constitution;
(b) drawing up a budget which shall be submitted by the treasurer to the General Committee within two (2) months of taking office;
(c) initiating such matters as are con- sidered desirable provided such actions do not contradict any policy as laid down by the General Committee and provided the General Committee is informed of such actions.

7. The General Committee shall meet at least five (5) times during its term of office.
8. The quorum for a meeting of the Gen- eral Committee shall be eight (8).
9. The membership of the General Com- mittee shall be:-
(i) The Chairman.
(ii) The other student members of the executive.
(iii) One (1) representative from each of the first four years of the medical course.
(iv) One (1) representative from each of the teaching hospitals.
(v) One (1) woman representative from the pre-clinical year of the medical course.
(vi) One (1) woman representative from the clinical years of the medical course.
(vii) Any medical student who is an elected or ex-officio member of the Students' Representative Council.
(viii) Any medical student who is a member of the Union Council or Union Board of Management.
(ix) Any medical student who is an office-bearer of National Union of Australian University Students or an office-bearer of the Australian Medical Students' Association or of the Inter-
national Federation of Medical Students Association.
(x) The editor of "Speculum".
(xi) Producer of the Revue for Medical Medleys.
(xii) Orientation Director.
(xiii) Sports Secretary.
(xiv) S.R.C. Officer for Student Health.
10. The General Committee shall be res- ponsible for:-
(a) formulation of the Society's policy .

(b) issuing the invitation for the presi- dency for succeeding year;
(c) appointing:
(i) the editor of "Speculum";
(ii) the Producer of Medical Med- leys;
liii) Orientation Director;
(iv) Sports Secretary;
and when necessary,
(v) the Secretariat for Australian Medical Students' Association under the terms of the constitution of Australian Medical Students' Asso- ciation.
GRADUATE MEMBERS:
11. The President of the Society shall be a graduate of the faculty of Medicine invited by the retiring General Com- mittee at the end of each year and who subject to his acceptance shall take office at the time of the election of the executive for the following year.
12. Honorary Vice-Presidents shall be ex- officio positions held by the Immediate Past President of the Society and the current Dean of Faculty of Medicine.
ELECTION OF OFFICE-BEARERS:
13, The following office-bearers in the Society shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting:
(a) the members of the executive with the exception of the President;
(b) one (1) woman representative from the pre-clinical years of the medical course;
(c) one (1) woman representative from the clinical years of the medical course.
14. The Editor(s) of Speculum shall be appointed by the General Committee in December of the year prior to his intended editorship and shall be res - ponsible for ensuring that the publica - tion date of Speculum shall not be later than the third week in October, and that proofs are presented to the Execu -

tive not later than two 2) weeks before publication date for approval, and the publication shall include the Secretary's report and the Treasurer's financial report for the previous year.
15. The Producer(s) of the Revue for Medical Medleys shall be appointed by the General Committee in May of the year of the intended production, and shall be responsible for all aspects of the production, except its budget which shall be drawn up by the Treasurer and the Producer in consultation.
16. The Orientation Director(s) shall be appointed in October of each year and shall be responsible for arranging Orien- tation Week activities for the first year medical students in the succeeding year to his appointment.
Sports Secretary(ies) shall be appointed in May of each year and shall be res- ponsible for arranging inter-faculty sporting activities for students in the faculty of Medicine in conjunction with the Secretary of the Sports Union.
(a) Nominations for the positions as listed in section 13 of the Constitution shall be given to the retiring secretary not later than one (1) hour before the time the Annual General Meeting is due to start;
(b) Nominations shall be in writing and each nomination shall consist of:
(i) the signatures of the two (2) members of the Society nominating the member of the Society for elec- tion;
(ii) the signature of the candidate seeking election accepting nomina- tion.
(e) If for any reason there are no nominations for any of the other posi- tions as listed in Section 13 of the Constitution, the Chairman of the Annual General Meeting shall be em- Powered to call for nominations at the meeting.

19. (a) Nominations for the positions as listed under section 14, 15, 16, 17 of the Constitution shall be called for by notices posted in the Anatomy build- ing, the Physiology building, the Union and each of the teaching hospitals not later than one (1) month before the appointment of the General Commit- tee.
(b) Nominations shall be in writing and each nomination shall be in accordance with section 18(b) of the Constitution.
20. Each year of the first four years of the Medical course shall elect a represen- tative from among their numbers by the end of the first week of April pro- viding there is a member of the Execu- tive of the Society present.
21. The student club at each of the hospi- tals shall appoint a representative from their numbers by the end of first week of April to the General Committee.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING:
22. (a) An Annual General Meeting shall be convened before the first day in April of each year.
(b) The quorum for such a meeting shall be five per centum of the total student number studying in the faculty of Medicine at the University of Mel- bourne.
(c) The Secretary's report and the Treasurer's financial statement shall be submitted to such a meeting for con- sideration under the terms of section 4 of the Constitution.
(d) The office-bearers as listed in sec- tion 13 of the Constitution shall be elected at such meeting.
(e) Amendments to the Constitution shall be brought before the meeting provided that such amendment has been handed to the secretary in writing not later than one (1) week before the meeting, and that notices of the pro- posed amendment are posted in the

Anatomy building, Physiology building, the Union and each of the teaching hospitals not later than two (2) acad- emic days before the meeting.
(f) Such amendments must be carried by a two-thirds majority of those vot- ing, provided that a third of a person is not a person, and shall be effective immediately thereupon.
23. Extraordinary General Meetings:
An extraordinary meeting shall be con- vened by the Secretary at his discretion or upon the Secretary receiving a petition for such a purpose signed by twenty (20) members of the Society provided that seven (7) academic days notice is given for the meeting and that the objects for such a general meeting are stated on the notice convening the meeting.
CONDUCT OF MEETINGS:
24. (a) The President or in his absence the Chairman shall chair all meetings of the Executive.
(b) The President or in his absence the Chairman shall chair the Annual Gen- eral Meeting.

(c) The Chairman or in his absence the Vice-Chairman shall chair all Gen- eral Committee Meetings.
(d) If both the Chairman and in the case of the Annual General Meeting the President or in the case of General Committee the Vice-Chairman are un- able to attend, another member shall be appointed by the Chairman in each instance to chair the meeting.
(e) In the case of the Executive, the Vice-Chairman shall be appointed at the discretion of the Chairman if both he and the President are unable to attend.
(f) At meetings of the General Com- mittee and at the Annual General Meetings, the Chairman shall have both a deliberative vote and a casting vote.
(g) At all General Committee Meetings, the positions as listed in section 9 (x) (xi) (xii) (xiii) (xiv) shall be entitled each to one (1) vote irrespective of the number holding each position.
25. The present constitution shall stand repeated, and this constitution shall be immediately effective.
