1. Where it is provided that a candidate for any degree of master or doctor may submit a thesis1 or work the Council may require that thesis or work to be in the English language. Subject to dispensation by the appropriate faculty, the candidate shall furnish to the Registrar three typewritten or printed copies of his thesis or work. The form of the typewritten or printed copies shall be in accordance with specifications made from time to time by the Professorial Board.z
z. No person shall be permitted to submit for examination a thesis or work for any degree of master or doctor—
(a) if it is substantially similar to a thesis or work previously examined and rejected in the University or in any other university unless the appropriate faculty gives per- mission;
(b) if it is substantially similar to a thesis or work upon which that person has qualified for a degree in the University or any other university;
(c) while a thesis or work substantially similar thereto remains submitted for examina- tiosi
—
(i) for any other degree of the University, or (ii) in any other university.
з. Each of the examiners shall read the thesis or work and may require the candidate to answer viva voce or in writing any questions concerning the subject of his thesis or work and to attend at the University for such examination.
4. Before making their formal return the examiners shall consult together or otherwise communicate with each other with regard to the thesis or work submitted.
5. (i) Subject to the provisions of this section the result of a candidate shall be in accordance with the decision of a majority of the examiners.
(z) Where there are two examiners and they are unable to agree, a third examiner shall be appointed by the Council in accordance with the provisions of section i hereof.
6. The Registrar shall deposit in the library of the University a copy of the thesis or work submitted by any candidate who has satisfied the examiners.
1The Professorial Board is of opinion that no candidate for a higher degree should be allowed to submit for examination a work for which a degree has been awarded in this or any other university, except as preliminary or supplementary evidence of the candidatе s ability. -
2 Recommendations for the format - of theses—
(i)
- -
Generally should be on quarto size paper measuring re; in. x 8 in. but, where quarto is not suitable, on foolscap size paper measuring 13 in. x 8 in.
(ii) Sheets should be numbered consecutively and clearly; interpolated sheets should be marked distinctly- e.g. бg(а), or as the case may require.
(iii) Folding diagrams or charts should be arranged so as to open out to the top and right.
(iv) There should be a margin on the left hand side of at least si in, uniform on all sheets.
(v) At least one copy, for deposit in the library, must be bound in such a manner that it will stand on the shelf as a book. All copies must have the pages firmly fastened within a cover. Spring-back folders must not be used. (It is recommended that theses be bound by the Melbourne University Press.) (vi) A title page must show the title of the thesis, the degree for which it is submitted, and the full name it
the author,
(vii) The name of the author must be on the spine and it is desirable to show there also the title, abbreviated if necessary.
