EXAMINATION. Two 3-hour papers (the first on German Texts for Critical Study, the second on Advanced Middle High German; the special subject will be examined by essay during the year; thesis in German; oral test of twenty minutes.

GERMAN SPECIAL COURSE

This course is intended mainly for Honours students of Arts Departments other than German who require an advanced reading knowledge of German for their respective courses. The course will be spread over three years. In the Second and Third Years students will be required to study German texts relating to their own subject, and will receive a certain number of tutorials per term (fortnightly or three-weekly) to guide them in their reading. Students who have passed German Part I can be admitted to these tutorials in their second and third years.

The course is based on the assumption that students have reached at least the standard required for the Leaving examination in German. •

In the first year the course will consist of two lectures and one tutorial per week.

SYLLABUS. For first year:

(i) Grammar, reading aloud, translation into English and German (based on Russon, see below).

(ii) Study of selected passages of German authors, illustrative of German history and civilization and cursive reading of examples of modern German narra

tive prose.

Students are advised to attend the course of lectures on "Outlines of German History, 1740-1914," prescribed for Part I during second and third terms or on

"Introduction to Modern Germany from 1871," prescribed for Part III.

Texts to be read will be arranged by tutors in conjunction with Heads of Departments concerned.
