The following communication, dated 23rd March. from Albury, N.S.W., appeared in one of the daily newspapers of this city : " The
recent dissension between the superintendent and matron of the Albury Hospital and Dr. Duncan, one of the visiting surgeons of thzit institution, has given rise to much controversy as to the manner in which the affairs inside the Hospital are conducted, and the committee have been
busily engaged investigating the matter in question. The origin of the petty quarrel which has taken place was, that when on a visit to the
1876.] Local Topics. 147 hospital for professional purposes, the doctor unwittingly gave offence to Mr. Wine, the superintendent, by complaining to him of the manner in which he treated one of the patients, contrary to his (Dr. Duncan's) instructions ; whereupon it is alleged that Mrs. Wine, the matron, violently abused the doctor, using most offensive language to him and stating, amongst other things, that he had been kicked out of the Melbourne Hospital, and threatening to slap his face. Dr. Duncan immediately sent a letter to the committee, complaining of the insult he had . received, and that body at once held an inquiry into the affair, the result of which was that a resolution was passed that Mr. and Mrs. Wine be called upon to resign their situations in the hospital.' This afternoon another meeting of the committee was held, when letters were read from the superintendent and matron, in which they resigned their situations in accordance with the expressed wish of the committee ; but it seems on further consideration that they thought better of their determination, and both wrote letters of apology, which were read at the same meeting, stating their wish to withdraw the tendered resigna- tions. As Mr. and Mrs. Wine were evidently sorry for their hasty conduct, and offered ample apology, the committee resolved, after Much discussion, to withhold their decision in the case for another week, at the expiration of which time, if Mr. and Mrs. Wine can come to an amicable arrangement with Dr. Duncan, they will be allowed to retain their situations. Dr. Duncan, although he has only been in the district a short time, has gained the good opinion of many, so that the affair has caused much diversity of opinion, and created no little excitement in the district."
The subjoined telegram from Young appeared in the Sydney Morning Zerald of the 15th inst. :—" Great excitement prevails here in con- sequence of the verdict of the coroner's jury yesterday evening in the case of Eliza Jane Davis, deceased. The verdict of the jury was that Kliza Jane Davis died at the Three-mile, on the 11th March inst. from asphyxia, caused by her taking a dose of medicine prescribed by Heeley, of Young, and containing carbolic acid and prussic acid in ''°0 concentrated a form ; and we further say that he is guilty of mal- Practice and manslaughter, caused through gross negligence.' The coroner (Mr. Armstrong) committed Dr. Heeley to take his trial at the next Circuit Court, Yass, admitting him in the meanwhile to bail in his own recognisances."
The second quarterly meeting of the Australian Health Society was held in the Mayor's room of the Town Hall, on March 21st. Mr.
Gilliam Turner in the chair. The report of the Society, which was read b y Miss Turner, the hon. secretary, stated that a few new sub- scribers had been enrolled since the last quarterly meeting, but before the Society could hope to widen the scope of its operations it must receive a larger amount of public recognition and support. Attention been drawn to the number of subscribers whose subscriptions had not neen sent in. The tract on Rules for the Prevention of Typhoid Fever had been printed, and 10,000 copies circulated. The council deemed It advisable to publish each tract on its issue as an advertisement, and .,Yrangements had been made for doing so at a reduced cost. The ilhrary now numbers thirty volumes, and the assistance of the sub- scribers was requested to aid in increasing the number. The balance in hand at the bank amounted to £16 7s. ld., which was just about sufficient to meet existing contingencies.
( Dr. W. J. Faulkner has been elected resident medical officer of the -Yneton Hospital.
