Increased safety is not the only advantage of the IS-101. Photoionisa- tion detection offers sensitivity (0-22 ppm full scale deflection), specificity (selective or universal response), stability (zero drift < 5 % over 25 hours) rapid response ( < 3 seconds to 90% full scale), and accurate measurement to 0.2 ppm.

Direct output in ppm and just 3 operating controls makes the IS-101 one of the simplest analytical instruments to use. The unit weighs just under 6kg and is capable of AC and DC (> 6 hours on its rechargeable battery).

The IS-101 is being used in the agricultural, chemical, paper and pulp industries, in the manufacture of semi- conductors and plastics, as well as in industrial hygiene labs and by emergency response teams. AUSTRALIAN LAUNCH OF REVOLUTIONARY NEW DUST FILTER

D C E Vokes have launched the SIN- TAMATIC dust filtration concept into Australia.

This major breakthrough in dust control technology, the first for 30 years, offers an extremely high level of filtration efficiency and gives three times more surface filtration utilising the same area as a conventional fabric filter.

SINTAMATIC filtration was recently launched into Europe at the A C H E M A Exhibition in West Ger- many and more than 100 SIN- TAMATIC filters have already been sold.

Mr. Harry Bate, Managing Director of D C E Vokes, said "The product has enjoyed unprecedented market accep- tance in the U.K. and Europe. Three months after launching in the U.K., twenty percent of DCE's manufactur- ing capacity was devoted to the SINTAMATIC".

In anticipation of a high demand in Australia, D C E vokes is licensed to manufacture the product at its Kingsgrove N.S.W. factory.

The SINTAMATIC composite materials comprise a patented blend of granulated polymers sintered, or baked until a rigid, self-supportive porous ele- ment is formed, the element is then coated with a P T F E solution to ensure

maximum filtration properties. This permeates the composite surface and is impervious to dust particles allowing' only clean air through the filter.

The thickness of the filter medium is many times greater than that of a fabric, increasing its working life con- siderably. Fabric filters require con- tinuous supervision because they suffer from chafing, abrasion and, in the worst cases, bursting.

John Kriska, Commercial Manager for DCE Vokes, pointed out that "The bane of any plant engineer's life is the unforeseeable failure of a fabric filter, which usually coincides with a period of high production. The interruption of production carries a high cost, so the SINTAMATIC filter will bring a feel- ing of greater security to the engineer as well as reducing the manhours spent on replacing components, and the cost of buying them."

A reverse jet air cleaning system removes any dust that gathers on the resistant coating and this ensures effi- cient running performance. As with other types of dust collectors, the dust can be disposed of in a number of ways, generally by hopper to an integral dust container or rotary valve and screw conveyor, which can mean re-cycling back into the manufacturing process if required.

The high efficiency of the SIN- TAMATIC elements (emission less than 5mg/m3) maximises product recovery and in a process where even a small percentage loss of a product can significantly reduce profits, it is an ideal solution as any improvement in overall dust collection efficiency will enhance the financial return.

SINTAMATIC filter elements are both chemically inert and dimen- sionally stable as well as being extremely burst and wear resistant. So confident are DCE Vokes of the mechanical integrity of SIN- TAMATIC that they are offering for the first time ever, a three year mechanical life guarantee on all units sold.

In comparison to fabric filter collec- tors of equivalent capacity, SIN- TAMATIC filters are more compact and can fit directly onto a purpose built storage container or can be integrated into the process. Standard casing/

hopper construction is mild steel with various grades of stainless steel being available as options.

After more than a year's stringent field testing, the first SINTAMATIC filter on operational duty has worked trouble-free on the exhaust of a 9 ton- nes per . hour cement mill. Tests

revealed no measurable penetration of dust particles through the filter.

Present elements will also withstand temperatures up to 80°C, with develop- ment work continuing to extend this in the near future.

Mr. Ken Rose, Technical Manager of DCE Vokes, said "SINTAMATIC filtration is ideal for continuous high collection efficiency in industries were safety, reliability and quality assurance are a high priority, such as phar- maceuticals, chemicals, cements, flours, footstuffs, paint and toxic materials". He concluded, "The SIN- TAMATIC range will bring greater security in risk management and a level of durability never before seen".

Increasing controls are being applied to toxic and noxious materials and the protection of operatives' health has become a prime consideration alsonside avoidance of environmental pollution. High levels of filtration efficiency allied to good mechanical security have become the order of the day.

THE DEFINITIVE DEDICATED AREA MONITOR THE HNU EC 501 ENVIRONMENTAL

CHROMATOGRAPH AVAIL- ABLE IN AUSTRALIA FROM SELBY ANAX

The HNU EC 501 Environmental Chromatograph provides a rapid, economical, safe method for unatten- ded monitoring of ambient concen- trations of up to nine specific compounds, at up to 20 different sam- pling locations.

The EC 501 is the definitive dedicated area monitor - a photoionisa- tion detector (PID) integrated with a microprocessor controlled analyser.

PID offers many advantages over traditional flame-ionisation detector (FID) based dedicated gas chromatographs.

PID is typically 1-50 times more sensitive, to the compounds of interest in industrial air quality monitoring, than FID. PID does not sacrifice linearity for sensitivity. Linearity is

maintained from ppb to thousands of pprn on a single sample size. With minor adjustments the EC 501 can also accommodate percent levels.

PID can be used to detect both organics and inorganics at the ppb level. Because the chromatograph uses photons to ionise the sample, no flame is required, no combustion by-products are produced and no hazardous support gases are required.

The EC 501 operates in two modes - Quickscan (continuous) and Analyti- cal (chromatographic). In Quickscan' the columns are by-passed, response time is less than 30 seconds and sam- pling locations can be switched using the optional 20 point sampling system.

The switch from Quickscan to Analyti- cal mode is initiated when a Quickscan

measurement exceeds the pre-set alarm level. The EC 501 then performs a gas chromatographic separation on that sample, for the increased sen- sitivity and resolution required for analysis of the multi-component sam- ple. The chromatograph automatically returns to Quickscan mode for the next sample.

In addition to controlling the analysis modes, the microprocessor performs self-diagnostic checks on power supply, oven temperature, calib- ration, gas pressure and gas flow. Data manipulation and storage capabilities include calculation of time weighted average values for the current three pre- vious shifts. The unit also produces various real time and by exception reports, documents the results of its

self-calibration routine, and sum- marises the collected data at the end of each eight hour shift.

Typical applications for the EC 501 include monitoring work place exposure, documenting compliance with statutory exposure limits, and con- tinuous monitoring of high risk operations and storage areas.
