The concept is also considered central to the positive psychology movement (Seligman et al., in Roscoe, 2009) and is the main paradigm used in counseling and development (Myers, in Roscoe, 2009). It has been noted that definitions of meditation are often a function of the researcher's own known practice(s) and therefore fail to represent the many techniques classified by this term (Bond et al., 2009). . Meditation techniques have been used as spiritual and healing practices for over 5000 years (Ospina et al., 2008).

Over the past 40 years, meditation has gained great popularity in the West, with an estimated 10 million practitioners in the United States alone, as well as hundreds of millions worldwide (Deurr, in Ospina et al., 2007). Individuals who regularly experience automatic transcendence are said to be characterized by stable inner happiness and increased intuitive capacity (Harung et al., 2009). The mind is said to transcend the experience of the subtlest thought to reach the source of the thought (Maharishi, in Gelderloos et al., 1990).

Meditation instructors also describe various stages of transcendence in both TM and Chi Kung techniques (Maharishi, in Gelderloos et al., 1990; . Liao, 2009). However, the researchers included four hundred clinical trials in their review and determined that only 10% of the studies were considered to be of good methodological quality (Ospina et al., 2008). The University of Alberta Evidence-based Practice Center (UAEPC) recently published a review of the state of research on meditation practices for health (Ospina et al., 2007).

For example, recent studies in meditation have shown that increased levels of activity, particularly in the left frontal lobe, are associated with better mood and improved immunity (Davidson et al., in Hassed, 2007). Findings from various studies on the technique have supported prior evidence for the hypothesis that increased mindfulness leads to better well-being outcomes (Shapiro et al., 2008). Attitude describes how someone is mindful, referring to accepting, caring, and discerning the qualities of mindfulness (Shapiro et al., 2008).

Travis and Ryan 12 Wellness Dimensions

This perhaps lends credence to Travis and Ryan's inclusion of technique in WI as an indicator of high-level well-being. However, it is doubtful that meditation is the only way to achieve high-level well-being, other means exist – some that may be a function of the natural human condition. The newly acquired organic molecules are also used in the production of raw materials needed to build and repair body parts.

Movement is one of the most fundamental expressions of energy production in the Wellness Energy System. The expression of emotions - the primary ones being anger, fear, sadness and joy - is an important form of human release of energy in the energy system of well-being. Feelings arise within the limbic system of the brain and serve to motivate thoughts and actions.

Thinking depends on the production of electrochemical energy in the brain and is therefore a type of energy output in the energy system of well-being. Although thinking draws energy from all three input sources of the Wellness Energy System, it is particularly dependent on sensory input. Communication involves the organization of emotional and thinking energies and their transmission in the form of a message, verbal or non-verbal.

Communicating is the energy output of the Wellness Energy System, which allows us to share our inner maps of reality with others, thus representing the foundation of culture. It is often closely associated with sex as an expression of the vital life force, elan vital or, in Eastern philosophy, ki or chi. It is dynamically dependent on the input sources we get from breath, feeling and food/fuel for its full expression and is greatly modified by our energy outputs of thoughts, feelings and messages.

The search for meaning is a complex energy output of the Wellness Energy System, which includes all previous forms of energy. Transcending is a movement in which all the energies of the energy system of well-being, which were once experienced as separate and in individual contexts, are appreciated as one. This knowledge inspires both love and self-responsibility, bringing us full circle in an endless spiral of well-being.
