HOLMES (SARAH AND WILLIAM) SCHOLARSHIP

HAROLD WRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP

SARAH AND WILLIAM HOLMES SCHOLARSHIP

1. Under provision of the Will of the late Lily Isobel Wright, two scholarships are offered each year—the Harold Wright Scholarship and the Sarah and William Holmes Scholarship—to allow holders to carry out an intensive study of prints at the British Museum, London, for a period of up to twelve months.

Although the objects of each scholarship are identical, the first is named in honour of the late Harold Wright, who was an authority on prints with a world-wide reputation.

In addition to academic honours and other marks of recognition, his advice was sought by almost every major art gallery with a department of prints. His association with

(8)

Australia and New Zealand derives from his honorary services to the Felton Bequest and his life-long friendship with Sir Lionel Lindsay, as well as private collectors ii both countries.

T h e second scholarship is named in honour of the parents of Mrs. Wright.

Because Harold Wright acquired his unrivalled mastery of the field at a time mon favourable to private studies than the present, it is not intended that the scholarshij should be linked to a specific project, specialized research or even a publication. Mrs Wright felt that applications for such purposes were adequately provided for by othe awards. She had in mind a completely free year, in which the holder would be abl(

to work as widely in one of the greatest collections of prints in the world as her husbanc did for many years. In later life he made many distinguished contributions to spec ialized knowledge in print scholarship, but what distinguished his work was the widtl of the original background on which it was based.

2. T h e scholarships are at present valued at approximately £2,000 and £1,500 sterling respectively, and may be awarded jointly, in which case the total value is approximately

£3,500 sterling, to cover board and lodging and any other necessary living expense;

in London for a period of twelve months. Provision for travel to and from Londor is not included.

3. T h e scholarships are available to undergraduates or graduates of Australian or Nev Zealand universities, or to other persons deemed by the Selection Committee to be of sufficient scholarly standard.

4. As stated in the Trust Deed, the scholarships will not be awarded to "any persor who shall at the time of the award be employed by any commercial art gallery or othei art gallery run for profit nor to persons who shall at the time of the award be engagec in art dealing on their own account or in partnership but may be awarded to person;

employed by any public or private art gallery which is not run with a view to profit"

5. It is expected that the successful candidates would have a background involving a serious study of the print and that the study at the British Museum would be usefu!

for the furtherance of their careers.

6. Holders of the award must undertake to return to their own country at the end ol the tenure of the scholarships.

7. Applications must be lodged with the Assistant Registrar (Arts), T h e University of Melbourne, Parkville, Victoria, 3052, not later than 30th July in each year.

Successful applicants will be required to furnish a medical certificate and the results of a recent chest X-Ray.

T h e authorities of the British Museum have offered their full co-operation, and the successful applicant will be provided with guidance and every assistance by the Keepei of the Department of Prints and his colleagues.

T h e Ackman Trust, which provides the income for the scholarships and the lectures, has an annual income of approximately $50,000.

It is expected that scholarships will be advertised annually and will be awarded in Medicine and Architecture alternately for periods normally of up to three years for study abroad. T h e preferred fields of study in Medicine and Architecture are respec- tively diseases in children and in women and the housing of aged persons and family architecture.

T h e first scholarships were awarded in 1983 for 1984 in Medicine; in 1984 applicants in Architecture will be considered for 1985.

RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

Regulation for the Election of the Scholar General Regulations

A Rhodes Scholarship is tenable at the University of Oxford. After election, a suc- cessful candidate has to be found a place in an Oxford College; there is no guarantee of a place and the award of the Scholarship is not confirmed by the Rhodes Trustees until the Scholar-elect has been accepted for admission by an Oxford College. Ap- pointments are made for two years in the first instance.

A Rhodes Scholar receives a personal allowance fixed from time to time by the Trust.

In 1982-83 the allowance was £3,480 a year. In addition, all fees are paid by the Trust direct to the College.

T e n u r e of other awards in conjunction with a Rhodes Scholarship is not permitted without prior consultation with the Secretary of the Trust in Oxford.

T h e Rhodes Trust will assist successful candidates with their travelling expenses to the United Kingdom. Scholars should write to the Warden of Rhodes House after their election staling how they intend to travel to Oxford.

Conditions of Eligibility

Candidates for selection in 1984 must—

(1) be of an age that they will have passed their nineteenth, and not passed their twenty- fifth birthday by 1 October 1984;

(2) be Australian citizens, and available for interview in Australia at the time of selection;

(3) have achieved academic training in a degree-awarding body in Australia suffi- ciently advanced to assure completion of a Bachelor's degree (preferably an Hon- ours degree or the equivalent) by October 1984. (Medical students who will have completed at least three years of the medical course by October 1984 may also be considered. Medical candidates should consult the Secretary of the Selection Committee before lodging an application. Particular difficulties can arise for can- didates wishing to do research in clinical departments.)

(4) be unmarried; a Rhodes Scholarship is forfeited by marriage after election or during a Scholar's first year of residence in Oxford. Permission to marry without dep- rivation of the Scholarship may be given by the Rhodes Trustees during a Scholars second or third year.

Basis of Selection

In making nominations, the Selection Committee will have regard to those qualities which Cecil Rhodes listed in that section of his Will in which he attempted to define the type of scholar he was seeking: literary and scholastic attainments; fondness of and success in outdoor sports; qualities of truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship; exhibition

846

(15)

of moral force of character and instincts to lead and take an interest in one's contemporaries.

Quality of both intellect and character is what the Committee will be looking for in a candidate. A Rhodes Scholar should not be one-sided or selfish.

Intellectual ability must be founded upon sound character, and integrity of character upon sound intellect. Success in being elected to office in student organizations may or may not be evidence of unself-seeking leadership. Cecil Rhodes himself evidently regarded leadership as consisting of moral courage and interest in one's fellows quite as much as in the more aggressive qualities. It was his hope that a Rhodes Scholar would come to esteem the performance of public duties as the highest aim. Continuing physical vigour to enable a Scholar to make an effective contribution to the world may be as important as prowess in a particular sport; physical fitness and skill and a liking for joining in exercise are activities usually sought in a Rhodes Scholar.

Financial need gives no special claim to a Rhodes Scholarship. Further, the Will lays down that 'no student shall be qualified or disqualified for election to a Scholarship' on account of 'race or religious opinions'.

In the absence of a sufficiently qualified candidate a Selection Committee will make no nomination.

Method of Application

One Rhodes Scholarship is offered for award in each State each year. One additional Rhodes Scholarship for Australia may be awarded at a later stage by a Committee of Selection which meets in Canberra.

Each candidate may make one application in a year, in one of the following ways:

(1) Candidates resident in a State may apply for consideration in that State or in any State in which they have received a substantial part of their education. Candidates for selection in a State will also be considered for nomination for the Additional Scholarship.

(2) Candidates resident or educated in the A.C.T. or other territory of the Common- wealth may either:

(a) Apply to a Selection Committee in a State in which they have been previously resident or received a substantial part of their education. Such candidates will also be considered for nomination for the Additional Scholarship; or (b) Apply directly for the Additional Scholarship; those who do so will be con-

sidered for that Scholarship only and not for a State award. Such candidates are interviewed in the first instance by a preliminary Selection Committee sitting in Canberra.

Candidates from the A.C.T. or other Commonwealth territories wishing to apply in a State but lacking qualification by way of residence or education should consult the Australian Secretary. All candidates from outside Australia should also write to the Australian Secretary at the address below.

Committees of selection will summon to a personal interview such of the candidates as they find it desirable to see. No candidate will be elected without a personal interview.

Each candidate wishing to be considered by a State Selection Committee is required to make application to the Secretary of the Committee of the State concerned not later than 1 September, or other such date as may be fixed, using the application form provided, which is available from the Registrar's Enquiry Office.

Standing at Oxford

All Final Honour Schools at Oxford lead to the B.A. degree. T h e s e are listed in the Undergraduate Prospectus and in the Examination Decrees and Regulations. A degree from an Australian University following a course of at least three years entitles the holder for 'Senior Status' at Oxford and to take a Final Honour School in two years (six terms) without having to take the First Public Examination.

Courses open to Rhodes Scholars

Subject to the consent of the College, a Scholar may read for the Oxford B.A. in any of the Final Honour Schools or, with the consent of the College and of the relevant faculty, a Scholar may be admitted if qualified by previous training to read for a higher degree such as M.Litt., B.C.L., M . S c , B.Phil., M.Phil., or D.Phil.
