Permission was given for the Faculty of Arts to restructure the first year of the Bachelor of Arts degree. With these two changes occurring simultaneously, there was no major change in the resources available to the academic departments of the Faculty.

THE LIBRARY

Pilcher, Chairman of the Department of Social Studies, was absent in the latter half of the year on a special study program as well as Mr J. Further development of the automation of the Library's housekeeping systems continued with the introduction of the LIBS 100 module for monograph acquisitions.

FINANCE

Approximately $257,000 of non-governmental grant income was transferred from the General Fund to a Ward Division 22. A summary of the General Fund Statement for 1984, with comparative totals for 1983, is presented below:.

7983 7984 Funds Available $ million $ million

107.675 Final Result

RESEARCH

The number of postgraduate students at the university continued to rise, with more and more areas having to be selective in admitting research students.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

BUILDINGS

The total cost will be under $4 million and the completion date is late 1985. A new computer-based system has been developed as an extension of the university's accounting system, using the administration computer system.

PABX

Melbourne City Council, without consultation with the university, issued a major report in 1984 that sought to establish the university and colleges within the nearby conservation zones. At short notice, the University and its affiliated colleges successfully delivered the Accommodation Village for the Australia Games in January 1985.

THE UNION

Most of these issues were resolved by the end of the year and the board agreed, subject to certain conditions, to continue operating the galleries. The university agreed to fund the removal of virtually all of the asbestos in the building.

SPORT AND PHYSICAL RECREATION

It has been a reasonably successful enterprise and oversees a cinema program, extensive craft courses, the awarding of grants to clubs and societies, the organization of union nights and other such functions, as well as Tuesday concerts, Prosh Day and Orientation Week activities. Most of the seats have been re-upholstered, large areas of carpet have been re-laid and much has been painted.

MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY PRESS

MELBOURNE THEATRE COMPANY

We also conducted guided tours of our workshops and production facilities for more than 50 primary and secondary schools, and we accepted 19 secondary school students for work practice. Now in its eighth year, the Curtain Up Scheme provides subsidized transport for Victorian patrons from 18 state centers to attend MTC productions.

UNIVERSITY ASSEMBLY

In addition to these training inserts, MTC provided voice lessons for professional actors who did not necessarily work for the company; and with the help of the Victorian Department of the Arts and C.A.P.P.A. MTC provided 32 weeks of refresher training. Established as a Friends of the Company organization, the MTC Society conducted a total of eleven fundraising programs – enough to enable the Society to provide funds to assist the Company in providing drama management training.

UNIVERSITY GALLERY

The exhibition program in the University Gallery in 1984 was varied in scope and included 10 exhibitions with loan material and one exhibition with works from the Collection. The University Gallery's programs in 1984 attracted considerable newspaper coverage and were well received by the public. The total number of spectators was 12,473.

GRADUATE UNION

Berry, retired at the end of 1984 after many years of remarkable service to the graduates of the University of Melbourne. The Graduate Union was in many ways his creation; he nurtured it through its formative years; he was loyal to it when others did not take much interest in the university's graduates.
