Purpose
This factsheet outlines familiarisation and planning strategies for the 2024 Applied syllabuses.
Background
The 2024 Applied syllabuses were redeveloped as part of the first review and revision cycle after the introduction of the new QCE system in 2019. The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority Board has approved the redeveloped suite of Applied syllabuses for implementation starting with Year 11 students in 2024.
Familiarisation
The key differences between the 2019 Applied syllabuses and the 2024 Applied syllabuses are that the 2024 Applied syllabuses:
• align more closely with the design principles of the 2019 General, Applied (Essential) and Short Course syllabuses
• do not require schools to develop and submit a Study Plan to the QCAA for approval
• contain QCAA-developed units that schools select, order and contextualise to suit their context
• detail two assessment instruments for each of the units selected for implementation.
Note that the QCE and QCIA Policy and Procedures Handbook v4.0 contains information about the 2019 Applied Syllabuses, not the 2024 Applied Syllabuses.
Planning
The QCAA will deliver support for the planning and implementation of the 2024 Applied
syllabuses in 2023. Schools should monitor the QCAA memos and QCAA events webpages to ensure that they do not miss important information.
To prepare for this support, schools can:
• read the syllabus section titled, ‘Designing a course of study in [syllabus name]’ to understand the planning requirements for the 2024 Applied syllabuses
• identify
- similarities and differences between their current Study Plan and assessment instruments and the units and assessment instruments detailed in the 2024 Applied syllabuses
- which of their existing teaching, learning and assessment resources can be used (with some modification) with the 2024 Applied syllabuses
- which units might best suit their context or which units best align with their current Study Plan

- innovative approaches to ordering and integrating units and assessments, within the parameters prescribed in the syllabus, to create engaging Applied learning opportunities for students.
These activities should assist in preparing to implement the Applied syllabuses in 2024 with Year 11 and engaging with the support offered by the QCAA later in 2023.
