SMOKING
The World Health Organisation has issued a new report on the effects of smoking. The report states that three-and-half million people die each year from smoking-related illnesses and that approximately half a billion people will be killed as a result of their smoking habit by 2020.
The organisation estimates that on average, smokers will die twenty-two years younger than non-smokers. Statistics show that 80% of the world’s smokers live in developing nations. As smokers in developed countries quit smoking, tobacco companies dump cheap cigarettes on new markets like China, Eastern Europe and Africa.
However, the report adds that there is some good news for smokers. ‘It is not too late.
Stop smoking, and your health will improve. One year after you give up smoking, you are less likely to contract heart diseases. And within ten years of quitting smoking, you are no more at risk from cancer than a non-smoker’, the report concludes.
