PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE ACTING PREMIER. MR. CORCORAN. 26.7.71.

DAYLIGHT SAVING.

The South Australian Government has decided to follow the Eastern States and introduce one hour of daylight saving for a trial

period, the Acting Premier, Mr, Corcoran, announced today.

Mr. Corcoran said the decision had been taken at today's Cabinet meeting and.South Australian clocks would be adjusted at the same time and for the same period as the Eastern States. (Victoria, New 5outh Wales, Queensland and the A.C.T. are expected to put clocks ahead by one hour from October to March.)

Mr. Corcoran said Cabinet had deferred consideration of the question of whether the State should also move to Eastern

Standard Time until the results of the trial of daylight saving were known and its impact could be assessed.

Mr. Corcoran said the Government had been forced to adopt daylight saving following the decision by Victoria and New South Wales to do so - a decision on which South Australia had not been

consulted.

It would have been intolerable for South Australia to be one and a half hours behind the Eastern States.

The Acting Premier said some 26 organizations throughout the State had made submissions to the Government on the question of daylight saving and Eastern Standard Time.

While some of these submissions had been completely opposed to any change from Central Standard Time, the large majority had recommended that South Australia should follow the Eastern States in daylight saving.

The Acting Premier said he appreciated that the decision might cause some difficulties to some groups particularly the primary

producers and in such matters as the starting and finishing times of schools in various parts of the State. However, the

Education Minister, Mr. Hudson, had assured him that headmasters and headmistresses would have authority to vary their own

starting times if this was felt desirable.

The Government would also appreciate and consider any further submissions or representations made to it during the course of thd trial period.

It was hoped that next year, before any final decision was taken, the Eastern States would confer with South Australia on the

effects of the change.
