CURRENT WORK I N THE ANTHROPOLOGY MUSEUM, UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND
Current work i n t h e Anthropology Museum c o v e r s t h e whole spectrum of museology, and comprises c a t a l o g u i n g , d i s p l a y , conservation, teaching, f i e l d r e s e a r c h and p u b l i c a t i o n .
For many y e a r s during t h e f i r s t h a l f of t h i s c e n t u r y , ethnographic museum c o l l e c t i o n s played a major r o l e i n
p r e s e n t i n g v i s u a l l y t o t h e p u b l i c and s c h o l a r s a l i k e t h e l a t e s t r e s u l t s of a n t h r o p o l o g i c a l r e s e a r c h . T h i s r o l e remained dominant f o r a s long a s t h e c u r a t o r s were a l s o t h e only a n t h r o p o l o g i s t s . Since then and e s p e c i a l l y d u r i n g t h e l a s t twenty y e a r s , anthrop- o l o g i c a l r e s e a r c h h a s d i v e r s i f i e d r a p i d l y i n i n t e r e s t , t h e o r y and methodology. This development a l s o s h i f t e d anthropology i n t o an academic, u n i v e r s i t y - c e n t r e d environment, and excluded e t h n o g r a p h i c museums from f u r t h e r p a r t i c i p a t i o n i n i t s development.
Since 1971 t h e Anthropology Museum of t h e U n i v e r s i t y of Queensland h a s endeavoured t o overcome t h i s s i t u a t i o n ; and t o achieve t h i s a number of changes i n t h e e s t a b l i s h e d museum p o l i c i e s were necessary.
Cataloguing: I n t h e last twenty-seven y e a r s , t h e c o l l e c t i o n of t h e museum has grown t o some 20,000 i t e m s . The e x i s t i n g c a t a l o g u e f o r t h i s c o l l e c t i o n was e n t i r e l y d i r e c t e d towards morphological and substance-matter o r i e n t a t i o n : A l l s t o n e a x e s / a d z e s were k e p t
t o g e t h e r , b u t those made of s h e l l w e r e completely s e p a r a t e d , a s were those made of metal. For each i t e m t h e r e e x i s t e d a small f i l i n g c a r d , which described a n i t e m and provided t h e r e s e a r c h e r w i t h a r b i t r a r y dimens ions.
The new c a t a l o g u e has provided sweeping changes and i s based on a f u n c t i o n a l o r i e n t a t i o n : a l l axes/adzed, r e g a r d l e s s whether they a r e made of s t o n e , s h e l l o r m e t a l are n o t k e p t t o g e t h e r , and each i t e m i s recorded on a 5" X 8" color-coded c a r d a s t o i t s
