Build Your Own Low-Cost Li

A LTHOUGH I have managed to acquire a fairly extensive library of farming books,

1•*• I find t h a t the most useful volumes on my bookshelves are not the products of the recognised publishing houses. For a number of years I have been making collections of the Department of Agriculture bulletins on various farming subjects. These, when bound a n d indexed for easy reference are far more informative t h a n most of t h e standard publications.

This is quite understandable. Take, for instance the case of a farmer who spends three or four guineas on a book dealing with stock diseases. He usually finds t h a t 80 per cent, of t h e book is devoted to diseases which he is n o t likely to en- counter, or which he couldn't do much about, even if they did appear in his flocks and herds.

Because of the book's wide coverage, the diseases which are likely to be en- countered in Western Australia may be dealt with somewhat briefly, and—as s t a n d a r d textbooks are not published a t very frequent intervals—the t r e a t m e n t s , preventive measures a n d other details may not be u p - t o - d a t e .

On the other h a n d , the Veterinary Division of our D e p a r t m e n t of Agriculture has published bulletins on most of the diseases which occur among stock in this State—comprehensive articles covering cause, symptoms, preventive a n d curative measures. They are revised a t fairly fre- quent intervals so t h a t they incorporate the results of recent research work.

These articles usually appear in the Journal and are t h e n reprinted in bulletin form, a n d these bulletins are available free of charge. By paying a small sum to have them bound, t h e farmer c a n obtain a cheap, but very informative book.

I found however t h a t a disadvantage of this method of compiling a library was t h a t just after I h a d bound all t h e avail- able articles on a certain subject into one

volume, another excellent article would be published and this would have to be held—perhaps for some years—until I could accumulate sufficient material for another book.

Some sort of loose-leaf a r r a n g e m e n t s which could be added to from time to time was the obvious answer to t h a t problem, but nothing really suitable was available at a reasonable price.

I discussed the matter with a P e r t h bookbinder and h e was most co-opera- tive. As a result of our talk h e made up some inexpensive loose-leaf binders which proved ideal. I have several now in use and thought t h a t I would pass on t h e information as I feel sure t h a t m a n y Journal readers would like to build u p similar low-cost libraries.

CHEAP AND LASTING

The covers cost only 8s. each, including postage and they are made to last a life- time, being fully cloth-covered on stout boards.

They measure about 8in. x lOin.—a con- venient size which takes our Western Australian Department of Agriculture bulletins, also those of the C.S.I.R.O. a n d the Departments of Agriculture of Vic- toria, New South Wales a n d South Australia.

There is a ruled sheet for the index, a n d the width across t h e spine is about l i i n . so t h a t they will hold a good number of bulletins.

The loose-leaf a t t a c h m e n t is a simple m e t a l gadget with two t h i n flexible metal t o n g u e s ; a grooved m e t a l strip with slots to t a k e t h e tongues, a n d a sliding cover to hold t h e tongues in place.

PREPARING THE BULLETINS To m a k e a n e a t job of filing the bul- letins, measure down about 3 i in. from the top edge of each one, a n d make a pencil m a r k a t t h i s point. The grooved strip is placed w i t h t h e top slot over the pencil m a r k a n d a n a r r o w chisel (I used a n old screwdriver ground to a s h a r p edge) is placed in t h e slot a n d given a t a p to drive i t t h r o u g h t h e paper. Repeat the opera- tion on t h e lowest slot of t h e grooved strip a n d t h e bulletin is ready for filing. The diagrams show t h e idea.

MANY USES

At 8s. each, these covers are cheap enough for t h e average farmer to buy several so t h a t he can make up books on sheep, cattle a n d dairying, weeds a n d poison plants, horticulture, insect pests, plant diseases, gardening, poultry or w h a t - ever subjects h e is interested in. The house- wife could make up a very useful volume of the " F a r m and Home" articles, or by including some blank pages could make a useful scrapbook for recipes a n d h a n d y hints.

A full list of the d e p a r t m e n t a l publica- tions appeared in t h e September-October issue of the Journal, a n d I would suggest t h a t t h e list contains sufficient good material for a n excellent farm library.

The loose-leaf binders are available from t h e maker—A. Pritchard, 130A Murray Street, Perth, a t 8s. each.
