During August, the University in collaboration with Flinders University hosted the 41st Congress of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science. The Australian Universities Commission's recommendations for the financial provision of the University during the triennium 1970-72 were released in August. Welford was elected an honorary member of the Ergonomics Research Society (honorary membership of this society is limited to ten);
Gallus, a lecturer in agricultural biochemistry and soil science for 38 years, retired at the end of the year. This total was again second only to that awarded to the University of Sydney, and represented about 13 per cent of the total A.R.G.C.
BUILDINGS
Awards to University of Adelaide staff were distributed as follows: 16 projects in the physical sciences received awards with a total of projects in the chemical sciences. 2,000 from the estate of Fred Johns for the establishment of "Florence Johns Scholarships" for research in some branch or branches of medical science; ·$6,470 from the estate of H. Harris, all to support the work of the Anti Cancer Foundation; an anonymous donation of $500 to equip a room in the History Department for slides, maps and gramophone records for the use of students; $1,500 from Esso Standard Oil (Australia) Pty.
500 as an annual grant from The Western Mining Corporation for the Geology Department; from the Australian Dental Association a gift of a portrait of the late Professor T. Draper Campbell, the University's first Professor of Dental Science, by Ivor Hele; of Lady Swift the Medical Library of the late Sir Brian Swift. The University is the principal remaining legatee of the substantial estate of the late J. S. Davies, the income of which is to be used to promote quality in animals.
STATUTES AND REGULATIONS
Excavation work began for the Library Complex Stage II, which is the main building project for the triennium 1970-72. In addition to providing for an urgent expansion of the library itself, the complex will eventually house the Departments of Architecture, Computer Science and Adult Education, the Computing Center and the Health Service and will provide additional teaching rooms for the Faculty. Art. Demolition work also began in preparation for the rebuilding of the Union Buildings to provide a bookstore, improved dining and kitchen facilities, and club and dining rooms.

BRAY, Adelaide,
COMMEMORATION ADDRESSES, 1970
Cornell served on the university's staff for 32 years and was professor of French from 1944 (when the post was established) until his retirement late last year. Rudd was professor of economic geology from the chair's inception in 1949 until his retirement last year at the age of 60. A graduate of the University of Adelaide (B.Sc. 1930), Professor Rudd was possibly one of the university's most important researchers. most well-known and respected members in industrial and business circles, especially in mining.
Now the belief that the promotion of learning is a good thing and the work of the University has several implications, some of which do not always seem to be recognized, and I want to stop you for a few minutes while I follow some of them. a little way At the end of the course he may be able to assess his shortcomings.
Finally I want to make one observation about the present position of the teacher, that is the member of the University staff
Thirdly, therefore, for the university to create opportunities for students to benefit as much as possible from their years at the university; Fourth, for the university to be a guardian throughout the community of intellectual honesty, freedom of inquiry and expression, open-mindedness and lack of prejudice. And fifthly, (something that would not have been necessary to mention in recent centuries, until recently), that the university, as they say, 'keeps the house in order'.
But it tends to be forgotten, I think, that the entire learning method at university has a pedagogical function. The fourth area in which I suggested that the public had a right to expect from the university was in the area of intellectual freedom.
Perhaps I should apologize for having inflicted on you a glimpse into the kind of financial difficulties with which we are faced. On the
And the university these days is especially in the world and of the world. Beneath their ceremonial dress are people who are generally interested in the affairs of the wider community. At the Faculty of Science and Technology, although it is not a "professional" faculty, there is still a wide range of research directly related to the needs of the community.
And lest I be misunderstood because of the current concentration on "professional" faculties, the same kinds of examples could be given for all faculties in the university. But back to the graduates: your education along faculty lines is only part of the education that the university offers.
