Men’s Pairs Championships

Finalists: D. Lindbeck, P. Kirkland, M. Dulihanty, C. Barritt-Eyles

The Men’s Pairs got off to an early start this year with the first Round being played on Friday 9th February and the Semi-Final and Final both being played on Saturday 10th. Saturday morning the weather was already very hot when the teams took to the green at 9.30 am. Some members forfeited due to the heat conditions in the morning but the others soldiered on and the eventual Finalists were Dave Lindbeck teaming with Peter Kirkland, a new transferee from Belconnen, and Mark Dulihanty playing with Chris Barritt-Eyles. The young guns got away to a dream start by taking the first four ends to lead 5-0. All players were drawing nicely, especially Chris who seemed to have his bowls on a string as he constantly placed them exactly where he wanted or was asked to by Mark. Dave got on the board on the 5th after being down two shots but knocked up Peter’s front bowl to score. It was just at this time that the wind started to strengthen and swirl a bit. Mark and Chris adjusted well to the change and drew three on the 6th but Dave and Peter answered with two shots on the 7th, 8-3 to Mark. The 8th end was exciting. Dave was 2 down when he drew a resting toucher, Mark landed it out and then when Chris came to the mat he drew a second which was a toucher too. The Skips didn’t make a difference with their last 2 as the head was quite crowded and difficult to get to. Mark scored a single

on the next end, 12-3 to Mark. On the 10th end the momentum shifted. Dave held 1 shot then knocked the Jack back about 12” to where Peter had a couple of waiters, then Dave added by drawing an extra with his last 12-7 to Mark. This gave Peter and Dave the incentive to build their score and they took 2 more on the 11th. The cloud came in and the wind dropped at this point, changing conditions a bit for the players. Peter drew a great shot with his last which Mark missed with 2 attempts with over- weight shots. Dave was now ahead, 13-12 on the 12th. Again the wind came up with gusto and a swirl but this didn’t distract the players as there were very close heads for the next few ends with Dave and Peter taking singles when Mark missed a couple of on-shots but Dave had success with his. 18-12 to Dave after the 16th end. Everyone stepped up a level at the business end of the game with Mark and Chris scoring 2 on the 16th and then another 3 on the 17th end, bringing them back into the game, 18-17. On the 18th end Dave was holding 2 shots when Mark attempted to take the Jack back to Chris’ waiting bowls when it bounced off one to land next to Peter’s back bowl instead, giving Dave another shot, 19-17. On the 19th end Chris was holding shot when Mark drew to add but he hit the Jack which again bounced back to Dave and Peter’s back bowls to which Dave added his final, while Mark missed wide and heavy with both of his last attempts. This seemed to take the wind out of their sails as Mark and Chris just didn’t have any answers when Dave scored 3 on the 20th end to take the game 29-17. It was a great game to watch with all players conducting themselves in a good display of fine sportsmanship. Special congratulations to Peter, who is now a Major after playing bowls for 33 years.

Women’s Pairs Championships

This year was very exciting for the ladies entered into the Club Pairs when 3 of the top teams were knocked out in the first round. This opened up the opportunities for teams who thought they mightn’t make it to the Final. After some very good and close games the eventual teams to play the Final were Jocelyn Jenvey playing with Nancy Polacsek, and Gayle Young teaming with Pam Bishop. The weather forecast predicted 45 km winds so the ladies took to the green early to get through as many ends as they could before the wind came. Jocelyn started on fire. She drew beautifully with her first couple of bowls, making Gayle work hard to get anywhere near the Jack. Pam and Nancy were evenly matched, but with Nancy coming in to save the end if needed with a great backhand draw bowl on many occasions. This pattern continued for the first 12 ends when single and only a couple of scores of 2 decided the ends, 8- 7 to Nancy. On the 13th end Gayle and Pam were holding 6 shots when Nancy again sent down a beautiful backhander and sat inside the shot bowl, 9-7. The next 2 ends seesawed with each team adding another point to the board, 10-8 to Nancy. On the 16th end Pam was holding 3 shots when Nancy missed wide with her last and Pam failed to add another but took the lead on the score board for the first time in the game. On the 17th end Gayle was holding 2 shots; 10” Jack high, when Jocelyn drew onto the front bowl and fell in to take shot. Pam executed her last bowl perfectly drawing in just enough to tip Gayle’s back bowl in towards the Jack and closer than Jocelyn’s, 12-10 to Pam. Jocelyn wasn’t going to let up. She kept drawing to the Jack, matching anything that Gayle put down.

The contest at the Skip’s end was very even too with Pam drawing very nicely and Nancy attempting to go through the head to knock out shot when needed. Gayle and Pam needed to dig

deep to maintain their lead, scoring a couple of multiples on the 19th and 20th ends and then sealed the game with a single on the last, 19-11 to Pam. The final score doesn’t reflect the closeness of the contest throughout the whole game. The sideline support for both teams was very much appreciated by the players with each good bowl, regardless of team, being cheered on by the spectators. The ladies also showed appreciation for the other’s good bowling skill.

The Final was a very exciting and friendly game with good sportsmanship displayed by all players and onlookers alike. Well done everyone.

LOVE THIS GRANNY …

“For better digestion – I drink beer. In the case of appetite loss, I drink white wine.

In the case of low blood pressure, I drink red wine. In the case of high blood pressure,

I drink scotch.

And when I have a cold, I drink Schnapps.”

“When do you drink water?”

“I’ve never been that sick.”

Good luck to all the Canberra members who have entered into the ACT Singles Championships which will be run over the month of March. Men play at Tuggeranong and the Women at QRSLM.

As each game is played, the results are not only updated on the Notice Board but on our Club website too, under ‘Bowling Program’.

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE

Q1. A Marker in a Singles game is asked to show the player where the Jack is. Can the Marker do so by placing their foot near it and leaving their foot there until the player has bowled, as a Skip would do?

Q2. In a Triples game a player arrived with only 2 bowls and wanted to borrow a bowl from one of the other players. Is this allowed?

Q3. When a toucher in the ditch is moved by another, previously marked, toucher when it is pushed into the ditch too, what should happen?

A1. The Marker can show the player where the Jack is but cannot keep their foot there. The Marker should stand to one side of the Rink, behind the Jack and away from the Head when a player is bowling.

A2. No. Each player should play with the appropriate number of bowls from the same set.

This means the player cannot borrow a bowl from another set.

A3. The position of the toucher in the ditch will be validly altered if the toucher is moved by

‘another toucher in play’. If the toucher is moved the new position should be marked.

Bugsy’s Tech Notes

This month's tip is related to a Bowls member who inquired on how to get photos from the mobile phone onto the computer and then allow selection of those they want to keep. First thing to note is that you log onto your computer using a Microsoft account which most people should do anyway as its free and keeps backups of your computer settings in the cloud as well as any documents you may wish to have there as well.

The reason I mention that is because the instructions below are based on using that account.

One of the good things that improved with Windows 10 is a nice built in feature called Phone Companion or if it's not there you can download it for free from the Microsoft store. It will work with both Iphone and Android phones. To use the application Click the Windows Start button, you can either type into the white search window on the task bar with the first few letters of the application name and it will appear or scroll down the apps list to choose Phone

Companion. Most windows PC's that get regular updates will have this already installed.

From there you will be presented with a screen on what type of phone you have be it Windows, Android or IPhone. Once this is done, connect the cable from your computer’s USB port to your phone. The Phone Companion lists your phone’s available storage space and available apps in a window which will pop up where you choose the apps you require on phone. In this case we want Import Photos and Videos: Choose this option to copy your photos and videos from your phone or tablet to your PC. When you’re through transferring files, unplug your phone or iPad. From here on, those Windows apps on your portable device will work in tandem with your PC, letting you work with the same set of files you have stored on OneDrive. My suggestion is to have a copy of those same photos in a folder on your local PC hard drive which makes it easier to work with. Given that you really want to pick and choose. So you would also create two folders with windows file explorer calling them different names where you can drag and drop copies of the photos you want. Or you can manually select by holding down the CTRL key while clicking on the image

(5)

with the mouse. This will highlight the file but before releasing the ctrl key right click after selecting the last image you require and then choose COPY. After this you can point the mouse in the new folder you created & right click on PASTE. All the images will start to magically appear. By default most images will display as a small postage stamp size of the image so it makes easy to choose. If not then select folder view, then select large icons in file explorer.

Next step is to get a bulk image compressor, the one I found useful is Mass Image Compressor which allows you to just select a whole folder and it will reduce the size of all the images based on a percentage you dial in. By default it will keep the image perspective if you choose the percentage reduction. It can also place those reduced files into another folder (the other one of two you created) which is handy when you want to keep the original sizes for prints later. It does this very quickly and it keeps the quality of the photo intact. This software is a freebie that can be down loaded from this site below

https://sourceforge.net/projects/icompress/

The end result allows easy photo attachments to email or posting to social media that won't take forever to upload and still have a nice quality picture for others to view.

Weekend Pennants:

Women

After 2 losses and a couple of good wins Canberra has moved up the ladder from bottom to 6th position.

Men Grade 1

After 3 games Canberra are holding top position. 25th February game was called off due to heavy rain. It looks odd but there were ‘islands’ of dry areas during the down pour.

(7)

Grade 4

Again the team is holding pole position after 3 games.

Members are reminded that if they wish to enter their names on the list for any bowling session that they may do so via the phone: 6174 3661 or via email: [email protected]
