The writing of this History of the University of Melbourne was undertaken at the wish of Sir John MacFarland; and the author deeply regrets that it was not finished in time to receive the criticism and suggestions of one whose life for half a century was centred in the University. The material used consists of minute books, correspondence and other records preserved in the Registrar's Department. Very often the bare, items chronicled in minutes related to events which, one felt sure, would have been interesting if the reasons for them could have been elicited with the aid of his accurate memory.
Mr. A. W. Greig has been helpful not only in making the books and papers readily available, but also in lending the typed copy of a historical sketch of the University which he wrote for another purpose. Mr. Leigh Scott has also made available a series of notes which he has made dealing with various aspects of the University's life. The Registrar, Mr. J. P. Bainbridge, has kindly read the manuscript, and made many useful sugges- tions, and Mr. Greig also has read the book in typescript with similarly valuable results. To these, and to others who have supplied notes or answered questions on points about which they had intimate knowledge, the author tenders his grateful thanks.
