COVER PICTURE Mount Manypeaks. about 25 miles east of Albany is situated in a n area w h i c h has an a n n u a l rainfaU of over 30 inches spread over a "growing period" of 82 m o n t h s . This area b e - came t h e first major settle- m e n t o n virgin Crown Lands to be established i n t h e south coastal district under t h e War Service Land Settlement Scheme.
Clearing commenced i n 1949 and the original area now contains 22 farms carrying up t o three sheep per acre on subterranean clover and Wimmera rye- grass pastures.
