TENNANT CREEK HOSPITAL ANNUAL REPORT 1991/92
On behalf of the Tennant Creek Hospital Management Board I am pleased to present to you the 1991/92 Annual Report.
The Board of Management comprising the members listed at Attachment A, enjoyed good attendance during 1991/92.
Dr. John Kiss resigned his position as chairperson due to the pressure of work. Mr A Fillmore has consented to act as Chairperson until a full membership of the Management Board is achieved.
Mr R Stow also resigned from the Management Board.
Both members will be missed by the remaining members of the Management Board.
HOSPITAL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
The hospital has had several reviews undertaken in 1991/92.
Firstly the Kerr Report which recommended the maintenance of the Accident & Emergency holding area with closure of the rest of the hospital. This Report caused much concern amongst the staff and residents of Tennant Creek and the Barkly District.
Management and staff took positive action and identified areas where savings could be made.
The Cresap Report followed in 9/91 recommending the Tennant Creek Hospital remain open. The Report then reinforced the positive action being undertaken by management and staff.
These included amalgamating services to reduce nursing staff positions, transferring laundry services to Alice Springs Hospital resulting in the closure of Tennant Creek Hospital laundry. The after hours courier work was contracted out.
Staffing numbers were reduced by natural attrition. The large Maternity Ward is to have extensive alterations undertaken making the area more amenable to the service it provides. The excess space in the Maternity unit will allow the Dentist, General Practitioner and Family Youth and Children's Services staff to move onto the hospital campus. A true one -stop shop as all services providers of Health and Community Services in Tennant Creek and Barkly will be on the one campus. The staff look forward to being a total team.
The Cresap Report also changed the structure of the Department.
Whilst retaining a Hospital Manager, Medical Superintendent and Director of Nursing, Tennant Creek Hospital now comes under the General Manager Alice Springs Hospital to ensure optimal utilisation of resources and compatible policies.
This had worked well with the General Manager Alice Springs Hospital attending the monthly Hospital Management Board meetings in Tennant Creek.
HOSPITAL IMPROVEMENTS
The grounds outside the staff dining room have been completed with the use of shade areas and planting of arid zone species.
The 24 bedsitters were repainted and furniture upgraded as required.
A non-slip surface was installed around the fenced pool area to prevent accidents from happening to staff and families.
A total of $86,000 was spent under the Capital Works program to replace an autoclave in CSSD, a gas burner stove in the kitchen, a Capnograph for the operating theatre, x-omatic camera in X-ray and a Sonapuls combined therapy unit for the Physiotherapy Department.
DONATIONS
The Hospital Auxiliary was very active in 1991/92.
The Hospital Auxiliary purchased:
. Colouring-in books for Childrens Ward
• Digital Sphygmonometer for Accident & Emergency . Educational motivation audio tapes for nursing staff . Childrens toys
Published a cook book for on going fund raising
STAFFING
The Tennant Creek Hospital has continued with two permanent Medical Officers on staff and a three-monthly rotating Medical Officer provided by Alice Springs Hospital. The General Practitioner and District Medical Officer provide some assistance with after hours call.
The three Allied Health positions of Pharmacy, Pathology and Radiography have remained stable. The Physiotherapy services ceased for three months due to the resignation of the incumbent and the difficulty in attracting a suitably qualified applicant.
Nursing and support staff remained reasonably stable during the year in part due to the Australian economic climate and high unemployment.
