Disability adjustments

Adjustments are intended to enable access to all NAPLAN tests on an equivalent basis to students without disability. Adjustments for students with disability should be determined in line with these protocols on a case by case basis by the school together with the QCAA, the parent/carer and the student.

Disability Adjustments overview – excerpts from Section 6 Handbook for principals

1. Disability adjustments are intended to be applied only to students with disability (Handbook for principals, Section 6 introduction, 6.2.2).

2. Adjustments are intended to provide access to students who will not be able to participate in NAPLAN on an equivalent basis otherwise. (Section 6 introduction/

Disability Discrimination Act 1992).

3. Adjustments should reflect the type of adjustments made in the classroom for assessment (Section 6.2.2).

4. Adjustments that are appropriate in the learning environment may not be appropriate in the assessment environment (Section 6.2.2).

5. Adjustments should not compromise the ability to assess the core skills that are the objects of the assessment (see Section6.2.3).

Sample documents Explanation Education Adjustment

Program (EAP) Current at time of application or pending.

Consists of two parts:

 a diagnosis by a relevant qualified professional,

 a specialist teacher report on the effect of the disability on access to the curriculum.

Individual Education Plan (IEP)

The IEP needs to address the adjustment being applied for, and provide evidence that the adjustment applied for is the usual adjustment for classroom

assessment.

If the documents above are not available, some of the following may also be offered to establish disability.

Medical reports (Audiologists, opthamologist, psychologist).

These will have been used to rule out sensory difficulties (hearing or visual difficulties that have impacted on learning) before investigating the possibility of specific learning disabilities.

IQ, WISC, WIAT, PAT or other achievement tests.

(Discrepancy model)

The discrepancy model is a common approach that documents the difference (if any) between IQ scores and achievement.

Documents to do with Response to intervention (RTI) approach

An RTI model is used to rule out effects of changes of pedagogy as opposed to disability that may be affecting learning difficulties.
