UNIVERSITY HOUSE
1. University House, which is situated within t h e University grounds, is a club for the members of t h e University staff. It was instituted in 1953 for t h e purpose of creating within the University a wider a n d more varied society than any single department could offer, a n d in t h e hope that it would promote friendship a n d t h e fruitful exchange of ideas between people whose work was varied yet h a d a common objective. It was intended to provide members with meals in pleasant surroundings, to serve as a place where colleagues from other universities might b e entertained, a n d to assist members in their private entertaining. T h e House possesses a liquor licence.
2. T h e present members of t h e committee a r e :

3. University House is financed by members' subscriptions, donations, with some assistance from t h e Council of t h e University. T h e building is t h e property of t h e University b u t its contents belong to t h e members.
4. Membership of the House is in accordance with t h e constitution approved by the members at a general meeting and can only b e changed b y a general meeting of members.
( a ) Foundation Ordinary Members
Foundation ordinary members shall b e those persons w h o were admitted as foundation members before Slst July, 1953.
( b ) Non-foundation Ordinary Members
( a ) the Chancellor, the Deputy Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, members of t h e Council of t h e University, the Warden of Convocation a n d former Chan- cellors and Vice-Chancellors of t h e University, President a n d Chairman of the Graduate Union;
( b ) full-time members of t h e academic staff of t h e University with the status of tutor or higher status;
( c ) full-time members of t h e administrative staff—
( i ) who have t h e status of administrative officer or higher status, or (ii) who are senior librarians or librarians grade A or librarians grade B;
(iii) who arc female administrative assistants;
( i v ) who are laboratory managers;
( d ) full-time research workers in any of t h e following categories—
( i ) research fellows a n d research officers,
(ii) graduates pursuing an approved course for the degree of Ph.D., (iii) full-time research workers with status higher than those of categories
( i ) a n d ( i i ) ,
( i v ) other full-time research workers deemed eligible b y t h e committee;
( e ) part-time members of t h e teaching, research or administrative staff of t h e University deemed eligible by t h e committee;
( f ) persons who are members of t h e senior staff of t h e affiliated colleges or who work for the greater part of their time within t h e University as senior officers of kindred organizations who are deemed eligible b y t h e committee;
( g ) visiting professors, lecturers, research workers a n d members of t h e staffs of other universities who arc not in any of t h e above categories a n d w h o are not admitted as temporary honorary members under Rule 1 1 ;
( h ) former members of staff of this University or of other universities who are currently associated with this University a n d its work.
A person admitted to membership under any rules previously in force w h o retains his qualification for membership under those rules as at SOth June, 1954, shall

not cease to be eligible to continue his ordinary membership merely because he is not within any of the abovementioned categories.
(c) Associate Members
The following persons may be elected to associate membership by the committee for such period as the committee determines—
(a) any person eligible for ordinary membership;
(b) the wife or husband (not being in statu pupillari) of an ordinary member;
(c) any person who is a member of the staff of the University not described in clause 4 and who is either a full-time or part-time member of the academic or administrative staff or a senior technical officer.
Associate members shall not be qualified—
(a) to be officers or members of the committee; or (b) to vote as members of the club; or
(c) to propose or second candidates for membership or office.
5. The house is open for the full academic year and is normally closed for 3 weeks at Christmas.
