GENERAL INTRODUCTION
The University of Melbourne was established by an Act of the Vic- torian Parliament in 1853. The University occupies a site of 47 acres in the northern part of the city of Melbourne and has a number of small properties in Carlton and Parkville. Adjacent to the Universitv' site, under separate ownership, are the affiliated residential colleges comprising 45 acres and the recreation grounds—16 acres. The University also shares with the Victorian Department of Agriculture tlie ownership of the Veterinary Precinct—four acres; and has interests in other external properties such as the Agriculture Field Station at Mt Derrimut, Veterin- ary Clinical Centre at Werribee., Architecture Centre at Mt Martha and a number of Halls of Residence. The Melbourne College nf Education,
located adjacent to the University, is not part of the University site.
Under tho original Act, and subsequent amending legislation, the University consists of a Council; the Professors; members of the teacliing stall; members of faculties and boards of studies; members of staff, other than teaching members, designated by Council; graduate and under- graduate members. A Council of up to 38 members representing the Victorian Government, certain community interests, the graduates, the teacliing staff, postgraduates, undergraduates and University Colleges, is Responsible for the conduct of University affairs. The general academic administration of the University is conducted by a Professorial Hoard, and individual courses are supervised by Faculties and Boards of Studies.
The University offers bachelor degree courses in Agricultural Science, Animal Science, Applied Science, Arcliitecture, Arts, Building, Commerce, Dental Science, Education (postgraduate). Engineering, Law, Medicine and Surgery, Medical Science, Music, Music Education, Science. Science iit Forestry, Science in Optometry, Science (Education), Sun-eying. Town and Regional Planning, Veterinary Science; sub-graduate diploma in Physical Education, postgraduate diploma courses in Agricultural Exten- sion, Criminology, Education, various medical specialties. Social Studies and Town and Regional Planning.
In most disciplines in which there is a degree of bachelor, degrees of master and doctor are available; and in each discipline in which a degree of bachelor is conferred, the degree of doctor of Philosophy may be conferred. There arc also courses leading to masters' degrees in Business Administration, Building Science, Engineering Science, Surveying Science and Veterinary Studies. The length of bachelor degree courses varies from three to six years of full-time study. Tho academic year begins in March and ends in December, and includes three teaching terms and an examination term.
The University is not primarily residential, but there are 11 residential colleges affiliated with it, and situated nearby. One, the Graduate Union, provides accommodation for postgraduate students. As well then; are several halls of residence, including International Mouse which is in- tended to meet the needs of overseas students.
The University is financed by grants from the State and Common- wealth Governments, fees paid by students and income from benefactions.

Tlie details of the subjects included in particular courses are published in the appropriate Faculty Handbook.
The Annual Report of the Council, with accompanying appendices, is included in part 2 of the Calendar.
The Research Report, which is published annually, contains details of the various research activities connected with each department. It also sets out the contributions to science and literature which have been published by members of staff, research workers and students.
The periodical. University Gazette, gives an official report of Uni- versity activities and developments.
Guide to Science Courses is prepared by the Faculty of Science and gives detailed information about course structures.
Copies of University publications may be obtained at the Melboume University Bookroom. Copies may be inspected at any university in Australia, at the Association of Commonwealth Universities in London, and at the leading universities in most countries.
