V I C T O R I A hy the Grace of God of the United Kingdom.of Great B r i t a i n and Ireland Queen Defender of the F a i t h and so forth To all to whom these presents shall come greeting :

N O W ye that in order to promote sound learning and education in Our Colony of Victoria We of Our special grace have given and granted and for Us Our heirs and successors do by these presents give and grant unto the University of Melbourne and their successors all that piece or parcel of land situate lying and being in the County of Bourke Parish of J i k a J i k a in the Colony of Victoria containing by admeasurement Forty acres and twenty-seven perches com- mencing a t a stake on the east side of the main Sydney-road at its intersection with the north side of Grattan-street bounded on the west by the Sydney-road three chains wide bearing north three degrees west twenty chains ten links on the north by a line bearing east twenty chains thirty-eight links on the east by a line tearing south twenty chains nine links and on the south by Grattan-street bearing west nine- teen chains sixty links to the commencing point and all the erections and buildings now being upon the said piece or parcel of land Together with all the rights members privileges and appurtenances whatsoever to the same lielonging or in anywise appertaining Reserving and exempting nevertheless unto Us Our heirs and successors all such parts and so much of the said land as may hereafter be required for making public ways canals railroads sewers or drains in over and through the same to be set out by Our Governor for the time being of Our said Colony or some person duly authorized in that respect and also all mines of gold of silver and of coal with full and free liberty and power to search for dig and take away the same and also the right of full and free ingress egress and regress into out of and upon the said land for the purposes aforesaid To have and to hold the said land and premises except as afore- said unto and to the u«e of the said University of Melbourne and their successors subject to and under the several conditions and provisoes hereinafter contained (that is to say) Provided always and We do hereby expressly declare that this OurCROWN GRANT OF UNIVERSITY GROUND. 2 5
Royal Grant is made on condition that the said land and premises and the buildings which shall for the time being be erected thereupon shall be at all times hereafter set apart maintained and used by the said University of Melbourne and their successors as and for an University for the use of the inhabitants of the said Colony and as and for garden pleasure and recreation grounds respectively in connection with the said University and for no other purpose whatsoever Provided also and we do hereby further declare that if the said Corporation shall be dissolved or by any means become extinct and be no longer, existent or shall permit or suffer the said piece or parcel of laud hereby granted or any part thereof or the buildings for the time being thereon a t any time t o cease for the space of six calendar months to be maintained or used as or for such University as aforesaid or grounds in connection therewith or shall permit or suffer the same or any part thereof to be used or applied to any other purpose whatsoever or shall demise or otherwise dispose of or in any manner part with the possession of the said piece or parcel of land or any part thereof without the consent in writing of the Governor for the time being of Our said Colony it shall be lawful for Us Our heirs and successors by any person or persons duly authorized in that behalf by our Governor or other officer for the time being administering the Government of Our said Colony to re-enter upon the said land or any part thereof and to hold possess and enjoy the same as fully and effectually to all intents and purposes as if this Grant had not been made I x JESTIMO.SY whereof We have caused this Our Grant to be sealed with the Seal of Our said Colony.
