ABSTRACI
The
effects of physical exercise
ona three
choicereaction
ti¡ne
task
were examinedfor a
groupof adults
diagnosed aseither
nenïal1y retarded or psychiatrically disturbed
on admissionto
anAdelaide
Vocational Rehabilitation Centre.
Results hrere comparedwith a gïotp of
non handicappedsubjects.
Thereaction time
task,vihich enabled
the
separate examinationof decision time
and movementtime,
Was performed onfive
occasions; onceprior to exercise
and thènafter
eachthree
minuteperiod of
gradedphysical
exerciseon a
bicycle ergometer.
Theexercise
loads were determinedfor
each
individual
accordingto his or her physical
workcapacity
(PWC).As
in previous
researchfindings, the
non handicapped population wasfourd to be significantly faster
onboth
performance measuresthan
the
reta::dedgroup, md in this investigation also faster
thanthe psychiatric group. This result
occurredin both the
pre-exercisetrial
andall four post exercise trials. All groups'with
the exceptionof the
non handicapped male saffple, showeda significant trend to inprove in decision time
asthe
demandsof the
exercise becameheavier.
Horvever,exercise
producedno
change j-n movement tirne perfolrnaftcein the
groups,with the
exceptionof
thepsychiatrically disturbed
female sample, which showeda
smallinitial
improvement. Thus these two parametersof reaction
timewere
affected quite differently by increasing
amountsof
physicalexercise. It
was arguedthat the effect of exercise
was seen oncentral decision
making processes,rather than
onthe peripheral
areas concerneclwith
suchthings
as arin speed.The
results
were exarúnedin relation to the arousal
concept and,in particular,the
invertecl Uhypothesis.
The absenceof the
conrnonlyfound
inverted
Urelationship
betweenleve1 of exercise
andperformance was e>çlained
in
termsof the duration
andintensity
of exercise,
andthe fact that prior rather than
concomitant exercise wasused.
Examinationof the data indicated that
theeffects of exercise did not dissipate over the four or five
minuteperiod of the task
even thoughheart tate, the
asstrned indexof
arousal,
hadreturned to
normallevels.
A
second experimentverified that the
irnprovenentin reaction
tirne performance wasnot
dueto
anytrainíng effect
asa result of
repeated exposure
to the
task.Physical work
capacity
(PWC)for the
handicapped groups was comparedwitll- that
obtainedfrorn (a)
amentally retarded
group froma Rehabilitation
Centrein
Scandinavia;(b) adult
noÛìsavailable
fromother countries
anda recent investigation in Adelaide;
and(c) the
non handicapped group usedin the study.
PWCfor
the handicapped groups wassignificantly lower than that reported for
their
Scandinaviancounterparts
andfor
non handicapped strbjectsoverseas.
However, when maximr¡rn oxygenintake
(MvOz)per
kilogrambody weight was estirnated from Pl{C, these comparisons between the handicapped and non handicapped groups revealed
differences
lvhich rverefar less marked. It
was notedthat there
wasa great
amormtof variability within the
handj-capped groups onthis
neasureof
cardio respiratory
fi,tness.Recommendations were made on suggested
lines of future
research,and on
possible
schemesof physical activity within Rehabilitation
Centres.
