To continue to the third year, they must be "recommended to continue" by the end of the second year. The third and fourth years are organized as a continuous course of study, but candidates sit preliminary final exams, both written and oral, at the end of the third year.

Formal examination papers

The head of the department will recommend such admission to candidates who have obtained at least second-class honors in the French part 1. Other candidates who wish to enroll in the honors must apply through the sub-dean for permission from the head of the department. For the philological and linguistic part of the diploma course, it is desirable that they have or acquire a working knowledge of Latin, but prior study of Latin is not a requirement for admission to the graduate school.

A course of four lectures per week throughout the year. i) Studies in Old French literature with special reference to epic cycles and lyric poetry. Studies in the old Provençal language and literature, etc. ii) Outline the history of the French language.

When determining the exam result, the weekly written work is also taken into account. The topic studied in the background course, which will vary from year to year, is usually chosen from the following: Folk-loro in medieval literature.

The work in the 3rd unit will be checked with mid-year essays and interpretation (see WRITTEN WORK above). The work in the 4th unit will be evaluated on the basis of seminar assignments and participation in seminar discussions.
