Directors of the University Faculty of Music and Teaching Staff CHAPTER L. Annual Report of the Dean of Music CHAPTER 2. University Conservatory Symphony Orchestra University Conservatory Choir. The Ormond Chair of Music and Conservatory The Chair of Music was established at the University of Melbourne through the generous donation ($40,000) of the late Ir. The current building consists of twenty teaching rooms, a beautiful lecture hall, concert hall (known as Melba Hall), boardroom, administrative offices, library, staff and student rooms.

The main goal of the conservatory is to provide a general musical education, but specialization in an individual subject is also planned. Legislation is under consideration which would permit the termination of the present performance course for the Bachelor of Music at the end of 1968.

COURSES OF STUDY

The Faculty of Music offers study programs for obtaining the degrees of Bachelor of Music, Master of Music and Doctor of Music, as well as degrees in musician and concert performer. The various schools, as set out in the regulations on pages 26-36, provide specialization in instrument, singing or composition, and the School of Music provides study for those who wish to teach music in schools. Although the curricula, which are extensive, are designed to meet the requirements of candidates for multiple degrees and degrees, other students may take individual courses with the permission of the Ormond professor of music.

Single Studies

Special classes for students of Wind Instruments and for Chamber Music, Music for Two Pianos, French, German, Italian, Diction, or any other subject approved by the Ormond Professor, may be arranged at any time and are not restricted to students of the Conservatoire . Students in the degree and diploma courses whose main study is an orchestral instrument must attend these rehearsals. Students in the degree and diploma courses whose Second or Additional Study is an orchestral instrument must attend if a sufficient degree of proficiency has been achieved.

Students of the diploma and diploma courses majoring in organ, pianoforte, singing or composition are obliged to attend these rehearsals, unless they are members of the Conservatory Orchestra. These instruments are available for use by students and members of the orchestra at a rental cost of $3 per term.

Two of these exhibitions are open only to candidates who have qualified to enter the course for the degree or diploma. Examination Board's Exhibition & Three Exhibitions which provide free tuition in the course for the degree or diploma. Open only to candidates who have qualified to enter the course for the degree or diploma.

These exhibitions will be offered in the first instance for one year, but they will be renewable for two further periods of one year each, if the Orrnond Professor. An exhibition may be suspended at the end of any year until the holder has passed the examinations for the corresponding year of the degree or diploma course. One exhibition valued at $80, open without restriction to prospective degree, diploma or single study students.

    • Candidates for the degree shall be bachelors of Music in the school of School Music

At the Honors Examinations in the first year of the course for the Diploma in Music, three Ormond Exhibitions of the value of $50 each shall be open to competition for candidates qualified to take the course for the degree of Bachelor. Holders of the diploma program in music or candidates for the diploma program in music can, after matriculation, enter the program for the bachelor's program with the status that the faculty may determine. 34; Legislation is under consideration which will allow for the end of 1968 to discontinue the present artist course for the Diploma in Music.

Candidates who complete their second year may compete in the same year for the exhibitions awarded during the exam of the first year for the Bachelor of Music degree (see regulation 3.56.6). Candidates who have completed the three-year course and who have met the requirements can be awarded the Music Diploma. When a candidate has completed any part of the program for the Music Bachelor's degree pursuant to Article 3.56, the Faculty can determine the status to which the candidate will be admitted to the Music degree program.

No candidate shall be admitted to the annual examinations in any year of the course unless he has attended such classes and done such practical work as may from time to time be prescribed by the Ormond Professor of Music. Provided that the Ormond Professor of Music may, with the approval of the Faculty, exempt a candidate from such participation or performance. The subjects for passing and honors examinations for the various years of the course must be as indicated in the following table.

At the beginning of the first year, candidates will be allowed to compete for the exhibitions referred to in article 5 of regulation 3.58,. Candidates who have completed the three years of the course and fulfilled the prescribed conditions can receive the concert diploma in Music. Candidates for the degree will be Bachelor of Music in the Vocal School as performers, or Bachelor of Music in the School of School Music who are in the opinion of the Ormond Professor of outstanding ability as solo performers.

Candidates for the degree must be Bachelor of Music in the school of composition or in the instrumental school. Candidates for the degree will be Bachelor of Music in the School of School Music.

Submitting a list of teaching materials, studies and pieces, and prescribing and discussing the basic work that would lead to the compositions in the list. Submit and demonstrate and discuss a list of teaching materials, studies, and advanced pieces. In the work of the average student, and to explain how to fix them.

One practical lesson of one hour per week throughout the year, for students whose Major or Second Study is a string or wind instrument. Other students whose major study is Pianoforte or Organ should participate as needed. a) Performance of a work to be submitted to and approved by the Ormond Professor of Music. One practical lesson of one hour per week throughout the second year for students whose concert study is a string or wind instrument, and throughout the third year for all instrumental students. a) Performance of a work to be submitted to and approved by the Ormond Professor of Music.

You will find details of the study of piano, organ, singing and string wind instruments in the school music course under the headings "Piano or Organ, Parts I, II and III. In each part Main and second practical study the student receives 45 minutes of individual lessons per week in the main study and 20 minutes of individual lessons per week in the second study Students of the diploma course in the instrumental school whose main practical study is a wind or string instrument must take the piano as their second practical study in II and Part III.

Diploma course students whose main practical study is brass or strings must take piano as a second practical study in I. and II. work. For this purpose, in I., II. and III. part (2nd year B.Mus.) the work was set by Professor of Music Ormond one month before the exam date. In the main practical study A, III. part (3rd year dip. in music), IV. and part V. at least one third of the program must be prepared by the student himself and.

In the second part, technical work will be required in addition to a program of songs studied during the year. To this end, a piece by Professor of Music Ormond will be placed in Part II one month before the date of the examination. In Part III students must submit for the approval of the Ormond Professor of Music, not later than the second week of the third term, a program at least one-third of which must be prepared unaided.

The proposed topic must be submitted for the approval of the Ormond Professor of Music at the beginning of the first semester. The examination of subjects under (a) will take place by submission at the end of the third semester of a short thesis.
