1. MEMBERSHIP OF THE BOARD

In accordance with Section 25 (1) ot the Hospital ManagRment Boards Act, I submit the Board's Annual Report on its and the hospital's activities for the financial year ended 30th June 1989.

Changes in the composition of the Board during the year are as follows:

Mr Gilbert Butler resigned on 19 December 1988.

Mr Gatjil Djerrkura was appointed on 3 April 1989.

Dr Michael King replaced Dr Paul Van Buynder in February as Director Medical Services.

2. BOARD MEETINGS

Board Meetings (Numbers 88 to 97) were held in accordance with Section 18 of the Act with the following exceptions:

The July meeting was brief and informal due to the visit of accing Secretary, Dr Kerry Kirke, for the Statutory Hospital Inspection.

The meeting tor November 1988 did not take place as sevP.ral members were absent on leave and a quorum could not be formed.

4. QUARTERLY INSPECTIONS OF THE HOSPITAL COMPLEX

Inspections of the Hospital Complex occurred in accordance with Section 24 ( 1 ) of the Act.

The 88th Meeting of the Board ( 18 August 1988) reported that Hospital Inspections were due early September, these were carried out by the person delegated to the area (as set out below) accordingly and reports presented

to the Board.

5. YEARLY INSPECTION OF THE HOSPITAL COMPLEX IN THE PRESENCE OF THE DEPARTMENTAL HEAD

In accordance with Section 24 (3) of the Act, the Board accompanied by Dr Kerry Kirke, the then Acting Secretary for Health and Community services, inspected the Hospital Complex. The inspection occurred 8 July 1988.

6. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS IN RELATION TO THE CONDITION OF HOSPITAL FACILITIES AS NOTED DURING INSPECTION

In general, the Hospital Complex, equipment and surrounds were found to be in good condition. Inspections noted a number of minor cleaning and minor maintenance aspects.

7. HOSPITAL STAFFING (a) MEDICAL STAFF

Dr Paul Van Buynder ceased duty on 17 April 1989 as Director Medical Services, and was replaced by Dr Michael King.

(c) NURSING STAFF

Judith Smith resigned from this position on 9 January 1 989 and the position was permanently filled on 6 June 1989

Sandie Safton resigned from this position on 31 May 1989 and the position has not been permanently filled as of 30 June 1989

Helen Devon continued as Radiographer

Elizabeth Carpenter resigned from this position on 9 December 1988 and Ruth Hannon transferred from Darwin on 9 January 1989.

Due to the change in the combination ot Registered and Enrolled Nurses, the separation of the Staff Turnover figures for the 1988/89 financial year would give a false picture. For this year a combined turnover will be provided which is 96%.

(d) ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF Director

Management Services

Reean Sneddon transferred to Darwin on 7 December 1988 and the position was taken over by Rodney sawyer on 23 January 1989.

Little change during the year with the remaining staff.

(e) DOMESTIC & MAINTENANCE STAFF

Some turnover of staff, however, no more than usually experienced.

11. GENERAL Community

The hospital continues to offer the following to the people of Nhulunbuy -

• Work experience

• Tours appropriate to the area of subjects being taught at school

• Tours during school holidays as part of Holiday Happenings

• Tours by organisations and members of the public on request - Lions Club, Mission Aviation Fellowship

Donations

The Lions Club, along with the local motorcycle club, donated soft toys to the Children's Ward Gove District Hospital at Christmas time.

Goods and money, over $900, have been donated by various community groups to improve the appearance of the labour ward. A 'staging' room has also been furnished with comfortable furniture, including music, for the use of women and families during early labour.
