Several members and alternate members of the board retired in April 1997 at the end of the 1994–97 term or resigned later in the year. Marshman, a candidate of the Association of Non-Governmental Workers in Education, retired after many years of service, mainly on the Standing Committee on Education. Professor Ian Falconer (University of Adelaide) and Ms Margaret Baker (Flinders University, SA) also retired as Board members at the end of their terms.
SSABSA successfully maintained its offshore program in South East Asia through the delivery of the South Australian Matriculation (SAM) program. These activities are listed under achievements in the main result areas of the Strategic Plan. These include schools that are part of the South Australian Department of Education, Training and.
The Council consists of the Chief Executive, and twenty-six other members appointed by the Governor of South Australia. This includes the three standing committees of the Council — Education Standing Committee (EDSC), Equity Standing Committee (EQSC), and Operations Standing Committee (OPSC).

CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT PRINCIPLES
The membership of SACs now includes the Chief Assessor(s), and the Curriculum and Assessment Officer acts as the Committee's Executive Officer. The selected pieces of work demonstrated the most diverse aspects of the visual arts curricula. The review of SSABSA's equity policy, a process that sought to define "inclusiveness" satisfactorily for the purposes of the Board, continued in 1997.
This included information to address some of the recommendations of the Towards Excellence in Curriculum report. These brochures introduce the SAM program, the documentation produced and the program evaluation standards. The Board's audited financial statements for the year ended December 31, 1996 were presented on an accrual basis for the first time.
The SSABSA booth was again part of the DECS X-SITE display in Walter Duncan Hall. The 1998 revision of the SACE Operations Manual began mid-year and continued until December.
