Ensure that the Orientation Checklist is completed on the first day of placement (see: Orientation Checklist Form, page 10). The former learning objective can be done in a library or at home using the Internet, while the latter focuses on a piece of equipment rather than the client. The ability to develop an NCP requires in-depth knowledge of the patient, the reason for admission, the main health complaints/concerns, the goals to be pursued, the selection of appropriate nursing interventions and strategies to evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions.
NCPs will be tailored to the level the student is at and even the name and format may change slightly ie. while students are expected to do most of the writing outside of clinical practice, it is necessary to interview patients and have access to patient records to obtain the required data. The actual writing of the assignment should be done after the end of the work day.
Assessment of students' clinical competence is the responsibility of the CTA, although it is recognized that preceptors play a key role in this activity. This assessment process will be completed in two phases, but relies heavily on preceptors providing ongoing feedback throughout the clinical experience period. This occurs primarily verbally with CTA, although we encourage preceptors to be present and where possible contribute to the discussion.
This is the summative written assessment completed by the CTA at the end of the clinical experience with input from the preceptor.
