Master of Veterinary Medicine

Introductory Animal Health Investigation

Whether you are a large animal or small animal veterinarian this course will help you make good use of epidemiological data (whether derived from a field study or mined from a practice

management database) to investigate health problems. After a general introduction to

epidemiology you will work on your choice of a large or small animal case study. Learn how to derive and interpret meaningful information about disease trends, so that your decision making is better informed and you can provide better advice. This online short course is an excellent way to upskill for veterinarians planning to complete a research project for their MVM. It is taught by Daan Vink DVM PhD (Epidemiology), Senior Advisor, Surveillance and Incursion Investigation, Ministry for Primary Industries, New Zealand

Course start and end dates: 24th February to 30th May, 2014 Course duration: 12 weeks – mid-semester break 14-25 April, 2014 Total learning hours: 50 hours

Topics covered

Topic 1. An Introduction to Population Health: Basic concepts and principles of epidemiology;

Investigation of animal health problems: Herd health and production management: Putting it into context: an overview of related topics

Topic 2.Analysis of Epidemiological and Production System Data: Recording and management of data: Using software to analyse data; Analysis of monitoring and production data; Interpretation of results for decision-making

The first topic gives an overview of epidemiology, management of animal health and monitoring of production. This is supported by an overview of applied topics such as surveillance, animal health economics and veterinary public health. The theoretical subject matter will be combined with case studies, activities and quizzes to apply the content. The second topic is essentially practical and hands-on, and applies content presented in the first topic. Choose from a large animal of small animal case study.

Course presenter: Daan Vink DVM PhD (Epidemiology).

Taught by Daan Vink DVM PhD (Epidemiology), Senior Advisor, Surveillance and Incursion Investigation, Ministry for Primary Industries, New Zealand. Daan is an experienced teacher and epidemiologist and was previously a staff member at Massey University’s Epicentre, the largest veterinary epidemiology training and research centre in Australasia.

Master of Veterinary Medicine Course delivery:

This course has an online classroom and is fully online. There is no face-to-face contact.

This course will be taught using an online classroom with learning activities and class interaction.

Assessment will be though an online test and an applied case study for which spreadsheets are supplied for analysis and interpretation. Remote access to licensed electronic library resources will be included.

Textbook

No textbook is required for this course

Accreditation:

The course is fully assessed and participants who successfully complete the course assessment will receive a Certificate of Completion from Massey University. If participants subsequently enrol in the Master of Veterinary Medicine (MVM), successful completion of this course (B grade or above) will earn 5 credit points.

Prerequisites

1. A veterinary degree; or other bachelor degree with GPA>5.0; or tertiary diplomas or trades qualification and significant work experience or, in select circumstances, significant work experience only

2. English language requirements: IELTS (Academic) minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual score less than 6.0 or TOEFL Paper-based test (P) minimum score of 575.

3. Access to an internet connection, and a computer with Excel, Open Office or Google spreadsheets.
