Marlins Report for MSV May e-News

Nationals: Four World Records, Male swimmer of the Meet and a Relay Trophy!

In what caps off a fabulous meet for the club, Pat Galvin and second-claim member George Corones broke two World Records each at the Nationals in Sydney!

Pat broke his own World Record - set last year - in the 100m Breaststroke and then followed up the next day by breaking the 200m Breaststroke World Record in a truly memorable swim. His 5 Gold medal winning swims included National Records in the 50m Fly and 200m IM.

Queenslander, the 95 years young, George Corones scooped 4 Gold medals from four events with World Records in the 50m and 100m Freestyle and National Records in the 50m and 100m Breaststroke.

Our Kiwi member Kirsten Cameron also put in some superb performances netting 5 Gold medals from 5 swims and National Records in the 200m, 400m and 800m Freestyle events.

Branch Records were also broken by John Cocks (100m Freestyle, 200m IM and 800m Freestyle) and

Tom Currie (50m Freestyle).

With his seven Gold and three Silver medals from individual swims, John Cocks was first in the Individual Point Scores for the Men’s 75-79 Years Age Group.

Overall the Individual Medal tally was 27 Gold, 16 Silver and 15 Bronze from 22 swimmers.

For the second successive year Malvern Marlins won the 240-279 Year Age Group Relay Trophy.

With 13 of our 22 swimmers having at least one swim in this age group, it truly was a team effort.

The other Marlins Relay teams also performed well racking up 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 5 Bronze Relay medals altogether.

At the presentation dinner, Mark Huggins started what we hope will become a Marlins tradition of the oldest male team member having the first dance with the youngest female member and vice versa. The result of this was George Corones taking to the dance floor with Nicky Kerr and Yann

Verbrugghe scoring Judy Gregory for the first dance. A sight to behold!

Overall, many in the team exceeded their expectations and recorded multiple PB's.

Once again, Congratulations to all swimmers - a fantastic result for all.

Official of the Year

Congratulations to our ‘Hooked Marlin’ Jeff Green (married to member Jan Green) who was

awarded the MSV 2012 Official of the Year announced on 26th March. Jeff is a very worthy winner of the award, which saw the criteria for nomination changed, to include officials who are not MSV members.

Canberra Centenary Special Olympics

26 year old Olivia Sayers was one of the 400 swimmers with intellectual disabilities who competed in the Canberra Centenary Special Olympics in April. Olivia swam extremely well, winning Silver medals in the 200m Backstroke and 200 IM and a Bronze medal in the 200m Freestyle. Well done Olivia.
