MAYORAL MINUTE NO 7/2020
VALE HARRY HYLAND 14 JULY 2020
Councillors,
It is with deep regret that I speak of the passing of long-serving volunteer, Harry Hyland.
Harry was recognised as an individual who approached a task with great commitment, and devoted his time and energy with determination in both personal and professional aspects of his life.
A dedicated educator, Harry’s life revolved around teaching. During his career, Harry taught at Castle Hill Public School for 20 years. He also served as Principal at both Wentworthville Public School and Rosehill Public School before he retired. Even after his retirement, Harry continued his love for teaching at Parramatta Evening College as the Director for another 20 years.
Harry volunteered himself for a range of activities, and was an influential member of the community. Even while caring for his wife Pat, who passed away from a terminal illness in 2006, Harry still continued to volunteer when he could.
For over ten years, Harry was in charge of the 355 Committee and worked closely with Council on matters relating to Castle Hill Showground. He was especially renowned for his dedication to the Harvey Lowe Pavilion, where he was the driving force behind extensive renovations to the venue, and was responsible for organising quotes and contracts for all of the work involved.
For many years, Harry was also a member of the Castle Hill Players, an amateur theatre company based at the Pavilion Theatre, where he was a Life Member and also the theatre’s Public Officer. Harry worked with Council to install two units for the storage of the theatre’s props and costumes. The building is affectionately known by Castle Hill Players as ‘Harry's Hutt’.
As a mayor, you’re not meant to have favourites but it is fair to say that Harry won the hearts of all who met him. He will be remembered for his generosity and his kindness and his desire to make the Hills a better place.
Harry leaves behind his two daughters Shannon and Lisa, five grandchildren and his partner, Sue. He enjoyed playing golf, writing plays and was never seen without a book in his hand.
Harry was an extremely dedicated volunteer with a love for the arts, and was described as a quiet and unassuming man who did not seek fame or recognition.
The Hills is a better place because of Harry Hyland and his legacy will live on.
Vale Harry. Your memory will live on through your devotion to your family and your community.
Accordingly I move that:
MOTION:
1. This Mayoral Minute be received;
2. A minute’s silence be observed.
