f POISONING OF STOCK
By P. B. LEWIS, Veterinary Surgeon
^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ • ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ » ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ » ^ ^ ^ ^ » ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ««.
"V/J OLYBDENUM has been found beneficial in parts of the State used as a fertiliser
•*•*•*• constituent for pasture. It is only needed in small quantities and should not be used at a greater rate or more frequently than is recommended.
Excess molybdenum in the feed may affect cattle, sheep a n d goats. Foals nursed on mares fed on high molybdenum diets have shown signs of poisoning.
Broadly speaking t h e element has the effect of depressing t h e ability of a n animal to use copper in the feed, and also appears to cause the movement of the ele- ment phosphorus from the bones causing rarefication and weakening of them.
Various symptoms have been ascribed to molybdenum poisoning and may vary from unexplained poor performance, p a r - ticularly of young stock, to severer con- ditions with scouring, emaciation, weak- ness, painful joints, etc.
Other effects described have been:—
(1) Change of the normal gait of m a t u r e animals to a "pacing"
gait. Both legs of the same side of the animal move forward t o - gether. This is painful to t h e animal.
(2) Ends of the long bones, particu- larly of young animals, are en- larged, resembling rickets.
(3) In older animals the weakening of the bones causes a tendency to frequent fractures.
(4) There appears to be a tendency for an increase in the percentage of abnormal calves born. These may be premature (7 to 8 m o n t h s ) . (5) In severe poisoning, sterility oc-
curs in both males and females, and apparently this is p e r m a n e n t in the case of the bull. In t h e case of the female there is a failure to come into season which can be corrected by copper supplements.
(6) In some cases sudden d e a t h due to heart failure has been blamed on excess molybdenum causing a copper deficiency.
