MONTHLY UPDATE

May 2018

  Faye Logan

The most important news item of this month is that the Committee has with great reluctance  accepted Faye’s resignation from the role of Treasurer, and her retirement from the Committee.

She has been a member of BHCA for over 40 years and a member of the committee for nearly as  long. On behalf of the club, the Committee thanks Faye for her immense contribution. She will  continue serving until the end of the financial year, at which point her departure will leave an  important gap in our responsibilities to be filled, hopefully during the elections at the AGM. Already  a life member for all her contributions to the club, she’ll continue to join us on the shooting line  free from the worries of organisation.

Annual General Meeting Date

A date has been set for the club AGM: 1pm Saturday July 28th in the club house. Put it in your  diaries! The AGM is where all committee roles are vacated and members are nominated into those  positions. A vote is not required if they are nominated for a role uncontested.

Our current committee members are listed on the website . As mentioned above, our biggest  vacancy going ahead is the lack of a treasurer. This is a role that desperately needs to be filled.

Treasurer Responsibilities

● Have access to the club bank accounts (club savings, term deposits, cheque account, etc),  and sign off on their transactions.

● Collect daily shooting fee money from the box and deposit them into the club account.

● Collect drinks and snacks money from the fridge and deposit them into the club account.

● Collect club expense receipts from members who have made approved purchases on  behalf of the club, and make reimbursements to them. E.g. equipment and maintenance  purchases, replenishing of snacks and drinks, etc.

● Previously, collect money from members for membership fees and shooting fees, but this  is now mostly handled by the Archery Australia website.

● Collect money from the Beginners Coordinator for Beginners’ Courses, and allocate a  portion to each of the course instructors’ club funds.

● Each month, prepare a monthly report on our financial status.

● At the end of the financial year, prepare an annual report that is presented at the AGM.

Target Faces

We recently had a significant shortage of 122cm (large) target faces. These are used both for  qualifying, and for many official target rounds. We also use smaller 80cm faces, but far less o en  and we have many partially shot ones that could still be used. If you are only practicing, or bow  tuning and not qualifying or shooting the weekly round, please consider practicing with a small  target face.

Practicing with a small target face is a good way to prepare yourself for longer distances that you  either aren’t yet qualified to shoot, or don’t have a high enough poundage for your arrows to reach.

Shooting an 80cm face is similar to shooting a 122cm face that is roughly 50% further away, but  without the additional effects of air resistance and wind interference. A small face at 30m is similar  to shooting a large face at 45m. At 50m, this becomes similar to a large face at 75m. Try it at 40m.

It’ll help you prepare for June’s Monthly Shoot!

Monthly Shoot

Our winner of the April Monthly Shoot was Stephen Morley ! Stephen shot a whopping 55 rating for  the Samford, dwarfing his previous rating of 43, giving him an adjusted score of 1022/900. Rob de  Groot missed out on winning two months in a row, coming second with 1016 on his longbow a er  shooting a 32 rating, beating his rating by 10 points.

Our June Monthly shoot will be another Samford , 90 arrows at 40m, all on the 80cm (small) face.

That’s the small one. Work on your groups! May the most improved archer win!

Beginners Course - June

Although our May course is still running (final class is this Sunday May 20th), our next beginners  course will commence on Sunday June 24th. Enrollments open on May 21st. If you know anyone  that is interested in archery, get them to sign up! The club will be open until 4:30 pm on all  Beginners’ Course days. Feel free to have an extended shoot!

Professional Spotlight

I’m going to close out this month’s newsletter by linking a video that you may have already seen if  you follow our facebook page. It features some amazing shooting that is well worth a second or  third watch! Check out this three arrow set from Chang Hye Jin of South Korea, during her gold  medal match at the Shanghai stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup.

https://youtu.be/UwLCcL01Srk

For those of you unfamiliar with top tier international archery tournaments, competitors first shoot  a WA 720 70m for ranking. Those that make the cut face off in single-elimination matches following  the matchplay format. For recurve, this involves a set point system, with archers shooting three  arrow sets. The archers take turns for each arrow, with 20 seconds allowed per arrow. The archer  that ends the set with the higher score wins 2 points. If scores are tied they receive a point each.

First to 6 points wins, but if they are tied at 5 set points th en it goes to a tiebreaker: the single  arrow shoot-off.

I encourage you to check out some of these, or at least the highlights, as there are some great  examples of archery form on display. The World Archery channel live streams tournaments, so  keep an eye on it if this takes your fancy.
