MSV tackles the English Channel Crossing
One of the pinnacle events in the Open Water Swimming world is the English Channel Crossing, which challenges members to cross the 33km from the shores of England to the shores of France. Those who wish to tackle the Crossing must first complete a six hour qualifying swim in water of 16 degrees or less in temperature.
In 2015, MSV members are stepping up to the challenge and attempting to cross one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes and passenger ferry route. Powerpoints’ Geoff Toogood and Doncaster Dolphins’ Glenn Wilson with both attempt to cross the Channel with solo swims. While three Boroughcoutas members, Alan Collett, Mark Stone and Mike Nicols, will make up a relay team.
While all four are working hard in training, Glenn and the ‘coutas boys are training under Chloe McCardel. The marathon swimmer has completed the English Channel Crossing seven times, including three single and two double solo crossings.
In training for the Channel crossing, which he aims to attempt in August, Geoff Toogood has already completed two qualifying swims successfully. On top of his qualifying swims, training for the Pointer includes long pool sessions of 10km+ and dry land training. The traditional breaststroker is hoping to put on 3-4 kilos before his attempt, to help combat the traditional 14-18 degree temperatures faced during the Channel Crossing. When asked if he is on track, Geoff replied with, “You bet!”
Good luck to Geoff (pictured below) in his attempt in August. We look forward to keeping our members updated on your endeavours.
