New online course: Explicitly teaching cognitive verbs
Purpose
To announce the release of the online course Explicitly teaching cognitive verbs. The course offers guidance for the planning and explicit teaching of cognitive verbs from Years 7 to 12.
Background
In 2018, the QCAA released the Cognitive verb toolkit — Years 11–12, and in 2020 the Years 7–
10 toolkit was added. These toolkits include resources that can be used in classrooms to make thinking visible and assist the explicit teaching of cognitive processes signalled by cognitive verbs.
Information
The new course, Explicitly teaching cognitive verbs, complements the Years 7–10 and Years 11–
12 cognitive verb toolkits. It demonstrates an approach to incorporating the explicit teaching of cognitive processes in a unit of work to enhance learning.
The course is appropriate for teachers of all subjects from Years 7 to 12. It includes:
• pedagogical considerations for explicit teaching of cognitive verbs
• a planning approach to ensure cognitive processes are a focus of teaching
• modelled examples of learning sequences in Years 7–10 and Years 11–12.
This self-paced course can be accessed via the Learning Hub application (app) in the QCAA Portal. Access can be granted for new users by the school’s Access Management Organisation Administrator.
To complement the release of the course, the Cognitive verb toolkit — Years 11–12, available in the Noticeboard app in the QCAA Portal, has been updated to include 17 graphic organisers.

Access to the QCAA Portal
The principal, or any person nominated by the principal, may request access as the Access Management Organisation Administrator before other staff can self-register for a QCAA Portal account.
To assign the role of Access Management Organisation Administrator, schools are required to submit the Access Management Organisation Administrator request to the QCAA. This level of access is authorised by the principal.
Once the role is assigned, the Access Management Organisation Administrator will then be able to authorise local school user accounts for school staff. The QCAA recommends that each school has at least two Access Management Organisation Administrators (numbers are not limited).
What you need to do
Encourage teachers to take the course, and to work together across the school to enhance their abilities to explicitly teach cognitive processes signalled by cognitive verbs.
