Saturday Pennant – one costly loss, one very strong win

Saturday’s Pennant round saw Aberfeldie 1 suffer a loss to top of the ladder Brunswick – a loss that makes it difficult (but still possible) to grab a Home final as we now sit one full point game behind second placed

Flemington/Kensington. With a very strong win over finals contender Sunbury, Aberfeldie 2 has maintained its top of the ladder position – in a Section where there are still five teams in the mix but with the top three separated by just 6 points (and with us probably having the most difficult run home).

Aberfeldie 1

Playing at Brunswick, and playing a little under strength, we were unable to match the ladder leader, going down 60-80 for just 2 points. Rink results:

Manny Flores, with Michael Bialczak, Sam Folino & Joe Engert – 14-24, held on for the first half (10-13 at the Break) but unable to maintain the pressure.

Sean Lee, with Carol Bayer, Brian Holden & Murray Whiteway – 11-21, lost ground early (6-13 at the Break) and unable to build momentum.

Nigel Thompson, with Graham Leydin, Norm Draper & Ian Ferretter– 20-13, slow to start, then took eight of nine ends to build a handy lead and kept steady to game’s conclusion.

Don Leale, with Harry Bayer, Stuart O’Brien & David Torkar– 15-22, kept pace early (8-10 at the Break) but regular failure to build heads proved costly.

As a footnote to this game, Brunswick is, this year, celebrating its Centenary and presented a Club Centenary Medallion to Aberfeldie & Strathmore when we both Clubs played there on Saturday. We, of course, have a history with Brunswick after helping that Club out around a decade ago when it was on the brink of folding. It is a credit to all those responsible for its incredible

turnaround of recent years, including its membership growth, its outstanding new facilities and its on and off the Green successes.

Aberfeldie 2

Playing at Home, we took a dominant 113-52 win, for 16 points, against finals contender Sunbury. Rink results:

Fred Sinclair, with Pat Carr, Clay Beveridge & Carmen Ritter – 18-21, looked to have the game won when holding 6 shots on the last end with just two bowls remaining, and before the Sunbury Skip took those shots away and won the end.

Margaret Clark, with George Pater, Noel Greig & Gabriele Forlani – 32-12, a powerful win, without concession to the opposition.

Robin Stoddart, with Joan Chamberlain, Derek Jarvis & Vicky Walker – 25-10, another very strong win on the back of a whole of game performance.

Joe Farsaci, with Graham Govan, Gerry Carr & Greg French – 38-9, a comprehensive win on the back of some big ends.

Mid-Week Pennant

Melbourne’s fickle weather saw both our games abandoned today. Early strong winds were followed up with steady rain. At Hoppers Crossing just two ends were completed before the rains came – leading to eventual abandonment after play was suspended for more than one hour. At Aberfeldie, it was much the same, with five ends completed, a couple of rain breaks and an early lunch, before play was abandoned with rain continuing. As it transpired, of course, a further hour after abandonment saw the weather clear in both locations. For us, it was a missed opportunity to lock away first and second ladder position and two Home finals. It remains a chance, but just a chance, with our two teams to battle out the last Round against one another in two weeks time.

President’s Handicap

I am advised that a new format for this event has been agreed by the Club’s Board. The revised format is directed at giving the President greater flexibility in allocating handicaps to players.

Format 100 Up

THE OBJECT OF THE GAME: The first player to reach a score of 100 or more is the winner SCORING

4 points for shot bowl

3 points for 2nd shot

2 points for 3rd shot

1 point for 4th shot

10 points to be scored each end - other than when there is less than 4 live bowls remaining on the rink Each player keeps their own scorecard which is checked against their opponent each end.

TOSS FOR MAT

Player with shot bowl delivers the jack and bowls first.

IN A CLOSE GAME

The scores on the last end to be added individually to progressive total For example: Player A is on 95 and scores shot - 4 points = 99

Player B is on 98 and scores 2nd shot - 3 points = 101 3rd and 4th shots do not count, therefore player B becomes the winner

News around the Club

 Good to see Brian Holden back on the Green playing for Aberfeldie 1 on Saturday.

 Billy Hobson was successful first crack at getting his driver’s licence on his 18th Birthday. Happy Birthday and well done!!! Obviously Apprentice Landscaper’s are raking it in, as Billy has purchased a BMW!!

 Congratulations and “thank you” to those of our Reserve players who come along to games as Bankers (in or with uniform). The value of that commitment was seen on Saturday, when Albert Considine made a late withdrawal from Aberfeldie 2 with illness, and we had players ready & uniformed to fill the gap.

Duty Rink

If you are playing at Home and you are on the Duty Rink, please make sure you arrive early to complete all Duty Rink tasks – before, and after, the game. IF YOU LOOK AT THE TEAM SELECTIONS, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SEE VERY CLEARLY IF YOU ARE ON THE DUTY RINK.

Remember

 The only players at the Head when it is being determined/measured should be Thirds (exception being when a Third is physically unable - and a fellow team member has the measuring job).

 Don’t rely on the opposition measuring.

 Follow your Skipper’s instructions on each of your bowls – don’t make your own decisions.
