governments on the financial system. Topics covered include the functions and operations of the various institutions and markets.

4. Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this paper students should be able to:
1. Discuss the structure, functions, and importance of a modern financial system.
2. Analyse the major classes of financial instruments, their uses, and trading characteristics.
3. Analyse the different types of financial markets and institutions and explain how they operate.
4. Explain how interest rates and security prices are determined and what factors influence them.
5. Analyse a government’s role and influence on the financial system and its participants.
6. Describe the current and developing economic and regulatory context in which financial advice is delivered in New Zealand.
