This paper develops competencies relevant to operating small and medium sized enterprises. The focus is on critical skills, ethical awareness and the concepts needed by today's small business owners, and introduces specialist topics in enterprise development.

After successful completion of this paper students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the significance of the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector in New Zealand.
2. Analyse factors that contribute to SME success and failure in the New Zealand context.
3. Identify and explain key processes involved in managing an SME.
